4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
35,5cl bottle at Pahad Poisid, Tartu. Pours pitch black like used motor oil, not much head but some beige bubbles are present. Roasty aroma with dark, bitter chocolate, dark fruits, hops, hints of citrus and wood. Sweet, complex and deliciously flavourful. Well balanced and the 90 IBUs are surprisingly well hidden. Full body, somewhat oily and with carbonation on the sodt side. Simply delicious!

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Jet black color with almost no head. Pleasant smell of chocolate, roasted malts and a subtle sweetness. Incredibly smooth and balanced. Bitter finish. Can’t even detect the alcohol. Another great Founders beer.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Holy! This is black as pitch with a billowy dark chocolate milk head. Nose of rich cocoa, balsamic vinegar, and salted caramel. Flavor is ridiculous with chocolate mousse, sweet vanilla, leather, smoke, licorice, bitter coffee, and something antiseptic all fighting for prominence. The mouth feel is oily, but not as viscous as some other imperial stouts. Still, an amazingly flavorful stout that is worth savoring.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aged bottle. Pours dense black with a short light brown head. Aroma grows increasingly complex as it warms. Dark chocolate, smoke and berry over heavily roasted and other malts. Medium sweet cocoa attack that quickly bitters to cold espresso infused with a dose of hops. Full body, thick, lip-sticky texture, soft carbonation and an extra-long bitter and warming finish. Dynamite stuff.

4.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 20/20
Founders Imperial Stout has a medium, tan head, lots of lacing rings left on the glass, and a black appearance. Some slight brown does show up on the edges, under direct sunlight. The aroma is of sweet, sharp, intensely dark-roasted malt. Taste is of charred malt, sweetness, some cream, a bit of coffee, possibly chocolate and dark fruits, a shade of licorice, and high bitterness, seemingly from the burnt effects. Mouthfeel is heavy and slick, and Founders Imperial Stout finishes rich and impactful. The alcohol provides warmth, as the beer is consumed. RJT

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
pours pitch black with a one finger tan head which fades to some lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, espresso, bakers coco, dark fruits, licorice, anise, molasses, and some caramel. Taste is is pretty similar to the aroma with maybe just a little booze in the finish. Has a medium-full body with a creamy, oily mouthfeel and a semi-moderately bitter, long lingering finish. Overall, a tasty, pretty complex imperial stout.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pitch black pour with almost no head, and very little lacing - it was slightly disappointing. If cold, you can see the syrupy thickness of this liquid, though it really comes into its own a little warmer. Aroma is mostly of coffee, some malt and medicine. Amazingly smooth, slightly viscous mouth-feel, with flavors of coffee. Almost no alcohol flavor. Remarkable.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
2012 release (from 2012 notes) in a 12 oz bottle served in a pint glass. Plenty of sediment at the bottom of the bottle.
Small light brown head is short-lived but leaves spotty lacing on the glass. Thick, opaque, black-brown liquid.
An earthy barleywine-meets-stout aroma, with some of the ample ABV showing. Rich dark roasted malts with hints of coffee and dark chocolate, and a stronger impression of dark fruits. This profile is more or less repeated in the head, although the flavor is not exactly what the aroma portends: It is less sour, much more bitter, and less fruity. Very rich, with an over-the-top, strong flavor from dark malts, with enough hop load to contribute to the taste beyond just the substantial bittering (IBU = 90!). More coffee in both the nose and mouth, as well as improved flavor with warming.
Feel: light carbonation; smooth and very full body. Can feel the alcohol on the tongue, and in the warming on the way down.
O: an extreme beer. The sheer strength, relatively high bitterness, too much sourness, plus some hints of smoke and burnt malt make this beer a bit of a challenge. Not an attractive substitute for Breakfast Stout.
