UPDATED: FEB 2, 2013 Aroma: Bold chocolate and coffee notes with light notes of vanilla and alcohol. Almost smells like a chocolate cake. Appearance: Pours black as night with virtually no head. Taste: This beer is huge amount of coffee and dark chocolate. They hit you the second this beer touches your lips. There is a very slight alcohol burn. The beer finishes up with a very small hint of hop bitterness. Palate: This is not a light beer. It’s thick and coats your mouth Overall: This is how a stout should be in my opinion. The coffee and chocolate really take center stage. It is a slow sipper. I would put this one somewhere between Founders Breakfast Stout and KBS. This is a better stout then breakfast stout, but it isn’t nearly as complex as KBS. With that said, this is still a great beer and I would recommend it to anyone.

Backlog rating. 12oz bottle from Utobeer, London. It pours a dark brown colour with a small beige head. Aroma is sweet and roasty with coffee beans, vanilla, wood and dark chocolate. Taste is sweet with a some bitterness from the coffee roasted notes and some sweetness with notes of vanilla pod, toffee and dark chocolate. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, great RIS

From Magnum Wines, Swindon. Pours jet black with a diminishing thin tan head, strong aroma of burnt malt & alcohol. Taste is chocolatey with vanilla, cherry and roasted caramel, velvety smoothness and bitter finish. Hubba-hubba.

355ml bottle. Pours black with a low, dense, deep tan head which settled to a light covering but left some nice lacing. Aroma of chicory, roasted malt, burnt wood, liquorice, prunes, soy sauce, dark chocolate and caramel. Medium sweetness and quite high bitterness. Full bodied, chewy but with a silky smooth, luscious texture. Low carbonation and a very long, burnt tar finish. Gentle warmth from the alcohol. A wonderfully complex drop and an excellent example of an imperial stout.

Pours inky black with a frothy brown head that quickly disappears. Aroma is rich chocolate and roasted malts. Low pine hops and vanilla. Taste is silky smooth, roasted malts, loads of bitter dark chocolate and a great pine hop bitterness in the end. Great beer.

Bottle. A few weeks past BB date but that’s how it appeared on the local shelves (I know that in most cases it doesn’t hurt Imperial Stouts to go past BB). Pours a body as dark as they come and with a medium tan head. Aroma has sweet dark cocoa beans and liquid chocolate. Well, this is indulgent. Taste has all the classic Imperial Stout flavours turned up to the max and then some more. Very silky and rounded mouthfeel. I always like it when the alcohol in an Imperial Stout is not upped to silly levels (a la Brewdog or Mikkeller) and the beer is made with drinkability in mind, as it always should be. This is an excellent example of an Imperial Stout.

(Founders Imperial Stout) Bottle 355 ml at home, served into a snifter, ABV 10.5% The pour is thick as oil, totally black, with a small dark brown head on top. Good retention, leaving light lacing behind. Aroma is heavy on olive pit, roasted malts, light coffee, light alcohol. Great taste, roasted malts, some vanilla, alcohol present but not annoying, ash, coal on the finish. Thick full body, carbonation on good levels, creamy and smooth feeling on the palate. Really good.

Pich black with a one finger high, beigebrown head. A lot of lacing on the glass.

Nose: Roasted caramel malt, dark chocolate, soy sauce, vanilla, cream, raisin, espresso and a little smoke.
Taste: This is so good! Vanilla ice-cream, chocolate, dark malt, cocoa, roasted malt, molasses, dark syrup, brown sugar and dark bread.
Body: Full body with little carbonation. Smooth, creamy feeling and great bitterness that kicks in at the end.

A masterpiece!
