My first experience with founders. Probably my first with an imperial stout. Set the bAr pretty high for those that came after. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Black with a brown head that quickly dissipates. All the usual suspects are there on the nose, chocolate, coffee, dark molasses with hints of soy sauce, vanilla and liquorice. The taste is big and bitter-sweet throughout, but with bitterness winning on over time. Low carbonation but a body that just won’t quit. No surprises here (except perhaps for that tremendous body), but in this case that’s a good thing.

From a bottle. Pours black with a creamy tan head, laces well, super truck with rich coffee flavours, chocolate aroma and bitterness. A great beer!

Pours black with a light brown head - light and fluffy with sturdy lace. Dark berries on the nose with a little coffee and cocoa hint. Extremely well balanced flavours - slight licorice taste, a little burned coffee and some thick toffee; surprising little bit of bitterness at the end. Excellent mouth feel - coats well, nice density and a little carbonation to boot.

Pour pitch black. Intense, thick and luscious. Sweet finish despite 90 IBU. Really nice - it’s hard to imagine a better imperial stout. It’s almost too rich for me to drink a whole bottle myself.

Taste is licorice, leather, chocolate, coffee, hints of bitter herbs, burnt sugar, dark berries and muscovado sugars. Full, creamy body, soft to medium carbonation. Solid, classic American-style imperial stout from Founders.

355ml bottle. Pours an inky black, with a moderate tan head, which lasts well and leaves good lacing. Bittersweet dark chocolate, Turkish coffee and a nutty, savoury note make up the aroma. Herbal hops up front soon give way to rich, bittersweet dark chocolate, which is joined in the mid-palate by strong espresso. A nicely weighty finish offers meaty, saavoury flavours. A very nice imperial stout indeed.

From a 355ml bottle on 23/7/2014. Pours pretty much black with a small brown head. Has quite a big aroma featuring chocolate, caramel, coffee, roasted malt, molasses, licorice, vanilla and a hint of dark fruit. The flavour is huge and extremely complex, featuring sweet milk chocolate, caramel, cherries, soy and red grapes. While definitely on the sweet side, it also features a massive roasty, dark chocolate bitterness which balances things out nicely. There’s a definite touch of booze in it, but it’s still quite easy to drink for something so big. The palate borders on syrupy and the carbonation is moderate. A very good impy.

Light roasted malt aroma. The flavor of black malt, coffee, chocolate and soy. Bitterness in the aftertaste fills the mouth a long time. Not the powerhouse that I thought but really good nonetheless. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.
