COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A bit of backwoods pleasure without the banjo. This strong stout is brewed with a hint of coffee and vanilla then aged in oak bourbon barrels. Our process ensures that strong bourbon undertones come through in the finish in every batch we brew. We recommend decanting at room temperature and best enjoyed in a brandy snifter.

2012 bottle, this one was courtesy of xscottypx. Thanks! Black with a brown head that disappears quickly. Aroma: chocolate covered coffee beans, cocoa, bourbon, toffee, vanilla. Taste follows the aroma with added milk chocolate. Quite full bodied. Amazing balance, very good stuff! I look forward to opening up another bottle with a bit of aging.

Bottle and draft. Deep black, a little smoky from the bourbon and oak, very well balanced, rich, warming, excellent strong beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Kaffe choklad bourbon vanilj. Tät svart till färgen. Smaken gudomlig, så välbalanserad och verkligen smooth. Når dock inte ända fram till speedway stout bourbon barrel aged från alesmith som fortfarande enligt mig är världens bästa öl hittills

Sampled 2015 and 2013 side by side... Both were pure black oil, pure brown head, dense. Coats the glass. Both smell sweet and bourbony, chocolate syrup. The old one had an unreal palate, can taste it in my toes like a fine whisky, very thick rich and sweet. The new one was more acidic and bitter, good hop character, but less punchy in the palate, a bit more raw but also more balanced as the old one was pure dessert. Extreme beer, certainly in the top tier.

2015 drinken in 2015 APPEARANCE - black beauty, as expected. Nice nougat head with moderate lacing. NOSE - nice bourbon nose, without being overpowering. FLAVOR - exceptionally smooth and well balanced. Bourbon is present but not overpowering. Signs of Breakfast Stout shoe through. NOTES - one of the best Bourbon aged beers that hasn’t been aged.

Originally reviewed 10/28/2011. 12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. 2011 vintage. Jet black with a small tan head. It dissipates with some wispy lacing on top. Smell is coffee, bourbon, and heavy roasted malts. Dark, burnt chocolate. What’s amazing is how well all three components shine through, without any one overshadowing the others. Taste follows the smell. Bourbon first, then some coffee, followed by a very roasty malt character. It’s fairly bitter throughout, mostly from the coffee and the roasted malts, which give off even more coffee flavor. Distinguishable is a chocolate flavor, but it’s very dark and very burnt. I first thought the malts were a bit harsh, but on a second tasting, I appreciate more than Founders could maintain the intense stout flavor among the bourbon and coffee. Amazingly light, considering the ABV. Low carbonation, but that’s to be expected. It finishes quite bitter, which makes the lingering flavors a little bit harsh. A thicker beer might make for some mellowing of these effects. Really spectacular blend of flavors.

Keg at Craft Beer Rising. A deep brown to black colour with a medium mocha head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, bourbon, some toffee, raisins, subtle molasses and slight pepper. Taste of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, oak, dried fruits, subtle molasses, bourbon, alcohol and slight vanilla. Full bodied and soft carbonation. A warming, roasted coffee bitterness in the finish with a bourbon aftertaste. OMG what a beer, packed with great, complex flavours. The intense roasted flavours are balanced well with fruit and whiskey tones

Rating #1000. 355 ml bottle 2015 version, from a trade with Garrold, many thanks Gary!
Pitch black, oily liquid, with a small, dense, creamy, moderately lacing, coffee colored head.
Delicious, smooth aroma of bourbon, melting chocolate, vanilla, coffee, cocoa, some alcohol.
Taste is as delicious and rich, with bourbon, wood, coffee, cocoa, coconut, some vanilla, slight liquorice, booze.
Full, oily mouthfeel, with a soft carbonation.
Finishes warm, alcoholic, dry, wooden, with coffee, cocoa, liquorice, some bourbon.

Excellent! Great example of a bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stout, with the bourbon notes very well integrated, not too dominant, so that there are room for lots of other notes. Maybe a bit too alcoholic, while it is still a quite smooth sipper. Overall worth the hype and among the best Stouts I’ve had.

Bottle BBE: 12.2.16. Room temp. Pours a deep, dark chocolate body with negligible head. On the nose: intense, fresh ground coffee, rich cocoa, marzipan and toasted marshmallow. Complex, developing, dark chocolate sweetness to taste with enough bitterness cutting through. Full-bodied with a chewy texture, low-medium carbonation and an extremely long, vanilla oak finish. A delicious stout that’s more than bold enough for its high abv. An excellent after-dinner sipper.
