A bit of backwoods pleasure without the banjo. This strong stout is brewed with a hint of coffee and vanilla then aged in oak bourbon barrels. Our process ensures that strong bourbon undertones come through in the finish in every batch we brew. We recommend decanting at room temperature and best enjoyed in a brandy snifter.

2014 bottle. Iíll tell ya, I visited 5 different places around Columbus to score a total of 4 bottles of this stuff for 2014 at about $6 a pop plus tax. I got a single 2013 bottle last year thatís still on my shelf. Straight up, this beer is overrated. Iím not saying it isnít great, but itís just not as good as the hype suggests. Bourbon County Stout crushes this stuff. Dark Lord too, though very different. Served in snifter. Effectively opaque black; foamy-frothy dark brown head. Improves vastly as it approaches room temperature. Aroma extremely heavy chocolate, sweet, malt, vanilla, coffee, alcohol warmth; subtle oak. Big big flavor is heavier on the coffee than I prefer, yet not heavy enough to be an all-out coffee stout; lot of booze here too. The bourbon is almost imperceptible at fridge temperature but thereís still a lot of chocolate and vanilla. At room temperature, the bourbon is much more in-your-face. Smooth, bubbly, frothy, heavy mouthfeel is big but somehow not massive; sticky. Really very good, but Iíd be hard-pressed to make tons of special trips to get this for myself in future years. Over-hyped and the trade potential is the only thing that justifies the hunt for this. Walking into a store 5 minutes after its official release and the one case is already sold out. A young kid and his girlfriend appearing heartbroken that they were on the special email list and still too late 15 minutes after release. A Giant Eagle with a single case selling 2 bottles to a person when youíre lucky to get 1 anywhere else. Itís a really, really good beer, but the anecdotes around finding this drink overshadow the beer itself.

Thick black with 3 inch brown head. Roasted malt and coffee aromas with a soft bourbon note. Creamy mouthfeel, coffee and bourbon are balanced. Very good but not the best.

Pours black with a thick creamy tan head that sticks around. Aroma is coffee, molasses, rich roasted malts & nuances of chocolate. Taste is all of the above perfectly blended. Coffee first, slightly bitter malts in the mid, followed by sweet chocolate for the finish. A sweet smooth ride all the way through. A true American experience. Masterful.

On tap at MacGregorís. Great aroma, booze, coffee, chocolate just to name a few. Deep dark pour with a thin tan head. Taste is chocolate, oak, coffee, booze and slight vanilla. Palate is thick, very thick. The booze really stands out here. From the 1st sip cold. I let it sit 45 minutes. Last sip warm, still boozy. A real sipper.

12 oz bottle. Tasted on 4/23/15. Bottle from Byron's Liquor. Aroma was great with chocolate, coffee & a slight bourbon. Taste is so smooth with a similar taste to aroma. Fantastic beer! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Blackish beer with a small brownish head. Bourbon and chocolate aroma Coffee and bourbon flavor with chocolate and light toffee. Medium-plus bodied. Bourbon and vanilla lingers with chocolate, caramel, light oak, and light coffee.

Smell is sweet malt and bourbon. Taste is malt, bitter chocolate, mild bourbon, and a bit of alcohol. The alcohol note is stronger if itís cold, but pretty mild when warm. Thick creamy mouthfeel.

Pours a deep black with brown head that lasts forever and leaves great lacing. Aroma is dark chocolate (dry, with cocoa), sweet red wine, mild coffee, earth, wood, smoke, alcohol - superb blending of all of these elements. Taste starts with bourbon, very sweet - then into a smoked woody chocolate in the middle, drying slightly. Booze and cocoa powder travels to the nose, and finally it finishes oily and sticky (and thin) with some coffee coming out alongside the cocoa. Aroma is very solid, but taste has all the right elements with sharp corners. Hopefully age will smooth those out, but I worry itís too rough up front and thin in the end. Not as good as I thought. Ivíe had several imperial stouts better than this that are easier to find and the same price or less.

Draft pour. Wow. Pitch black with a gently foaming dark tan head. Huge legs on this one. Aroma is dark chocolate, bourbon, oak. Taste is chocolate, chocolate malt, vanilla, strong coffee, more oak, bourbon. A little raisin, cherry skin. Some earthy notes. Finishes fairly dry, with a little alcohol burn. Mouthfeel is full and lush, carbonation is balanced. Excellent.
