Definitely a high quality stout. The bourbon barrel really comes through, more so than any other barrel aged stout Iíve had. Great beer but doesnít blow me away like a BCBS. More than worth the $5 price tag.

When people ask me my all-time favorite beer I usually say Founders KBS and for good reason Ė itís pretty much a perfect beer. Itís big and robust, complex, delicious, great-smelling and a pleasure to drink. Thatís what makes for a World Class beer in my book.
I poured a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. It was bottled on 2/17/15 and cost $5.99 ($0.50 per ounce).
Appearance: Inky black in color but faint brown highlights. Pours to a two-finger, tan, frothy head which laces and retains extremely well.
Smell: Huge coffee and bourbon notes. Sweet but not sugary.
Taste: Iíve had this beer every year since 2011 and it does have minor variations from year to year. The 2015 edition seems to be the most overtly balanced of all the brews I can remember. Up front thereís a strong sweet sensation of vanilla and chocolate with sweet dark maltiness. On the second half the coffee emerges with an intensity thatís pretty amazing; akin to gourmet French Roast black coffee rather than sugary iced coffee. Right as it finishes the bourbon and the natural alcohol completely dominate. Itís not quite as intense as taking a shot of bourbon straight up, but itís awfully close. These flavor patterns repeat and grow a little more nuanced each sip. I donít detect much in the way of specific hops or malts, though I will say itís amazing how well-balanced the palette is since thereís plenty of bitterness and at no point does it taste like a malt bomb. Another outstanding brew from an outstanding brewery.
Drinkability: At 11.2% ABV and 70 IBUs, Founders KBS is a big beer to say the least. But itís not a behemoth by any means; in fact, this is one of the softest, smoothest beers Iíve ever had the pleasure of drinking. The moment it hit my palate the first thing I noticed was the soft, smooth texture Ė almost like melted marshmallow. And yet, for such a flavorful brew, itís surprisingly not cloying or sticky at all. It finishes rather dry, but itís easily tolerable. The first few swigs have significant alcohol warmth, but I grew accustomed to them quickly. This is a liquid dessert in and of itself Ė do not pair it with anything and enjoy it on its own.

2015 KBS bottle to snifter. Appearance: black pour, thin fluffy brown head that faded fast. Aroma: bourbon, vanilla, booze. Taste: Bourbon flavour dominated & vanilla aroma comes out after letting the beer breath. Overall: Flavourful boozy must try from Founders. Let it warm up slightly before serving.

2015 bottle to snifter. Jet black pour, thin fluffy, brown head, fades fast. Nose was all booze. The bourbon flavor dominated. Picked up some strong vanilla after sitting. Decent sipping, but had higher hopes.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottled 2/12/15, Refrigerated 5 hours, poured, rated aroma and taste, then let it sit for about 20 minutes to move towards room temp and open up a bit per the brewerís instructions. Pours an oily black letting no light through with a good dark chocolate milk brown colored head. Aroma is huge oak, smoke, and vanilla, turning to chocolate and roasted coffee, oatmeal, and a slight boozy burn at the end. First taste straight from fridge is chocolate, smoke, coffee, oatmeal, tons of sweet vanilla, creamy, oatmeal, some dark fruit that are more bitter leading to a bitter finish and just a hint of booze burning for it being 11.2%, very good. After sitting for a while it warms into different notes, much stronger vanilla, a bourbon sweetness now has become very noticable, the chocolate sweetness to chocolate milk at oats are the grain of all that I pick out. The dark fruits disappear and are replaced by dark bitter chocolate, smooths out greatly and the booze/bourbon become more apparent. Awesome beer, definitely worth putting the effort forth to grab as many as allowed when it is released.

Bottle from mchughs. Pours deep black with tan head. Aroma is mellow bourbon, oak, chocolate, vanilla hints. Flavour is creamy bourbon, more vanilla, milky chocolate. The mouthfeel is so smooth and luscious. Bourbon sting on the finish. Dry earthy cream on the finish. Lives up to the hype. Fantastic.

Black as night slight ring of bubbles along the edge and no lacing to speak of. Smells of booze, chocolate, oak, bourbon, and more booze. Taste is sweet bourbon, chocolate notes, oak barrel and slight vanilla. Thick, creamy, coating on the palate with burn on the finish. One amazing stout indeed!

12oz into a tall flute. Pours a thick black sharpie midnight canít see anything but black, black. Nice shaded brown head, soft texture, seldom lacing, mellow and relaxed appearance. Aroma of a smoky backwoods of booze, coffee, rum, chocolate, more booze, bourbon, malty ambivalence. Taste of the same, all packaged and slapped in your face from a farmyard in Michigan. This packs a phat abv punch, prevalent throughout. A bit acidic and harsh after taste leaves me unsteady about the true glory of this, but its certainly not bad. Bottle from Mr. Dean. No born on date. A thick and gracious imp stout at a dire beginning of spring is certainly welcome.

Vintage 2011. Lovely aromas of raisins, oak and some sweetness. The taste is really a mix between coffee, chocolate, oak, raisins and soy. Heavy bitterness that fills the mouth forever. Jeez what taste sensation. Follow me @ Kung av Ųl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.
