5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 zach8270 (2816) - Henrietta, New York, USA - SEP 1, 2009
UPDATED: SEP 7, 2009 (bottle - 12 oz) Dark black with a thick tan head. Hint of coffee? Not my glass. Tons of coffee in the aroma mixing with some sweet bourbon notes along with some vanilla and chocolate. Flavor is a huge explosion of coffee, bourbon, roasted malts, and chocolate. Lots of vanilla sweetness rounds up the end with a lightly bitter and lasting coffee finish at the very end. I think this rivals the Bourbon County for my taste. Thanks David!

Pours pure black like used motor oil, with little to no head. HUGE coffee, bakers chocolate and vanilla flavors. So smooth that the ABV was all but lost except for the warming glow. Delicious.

UPDATED: JUN 6, 2006 (first off many thanks ti sliffy for the hookup.)i have been waiting to try this brew for ages now,i guess today is the day!this b.a. stout poured a thick motor oil black with a nice, but small dark brown head.as the head sat it left nice dark webbing on the glass.i then held the snifter up to my nose and could not believe what i recieved.the first wave of aroma was,you guessed it,coffee!the second wave was a lovely blend of bourbon and oak,not overpowering, but just right.the third was a mix of dark and milk chcoolate.then the fourth was a blend of oatmeal, roasted malts, and black liquorice.ok now after smelling it for ten minutes, ill take the fisrt sip.WOW!the numerous levels of taste hit my palate so fast it was hard to even catch them all.after a few more sips i picked up on what my brain was telling me was absolute bliss, and what made it that way.coffee, chocolate covered raspberries, bourbon, oak, vanilla, milk chocolate, alcohol, black liquorice, and roasted malts all smacked me across the face every time i took a sip.is this beer prefect?i would say YES!its right up at the top with speedway stout to me and my only complaint that i have is that i only have another bottle.
SECOND BOTTLE ON 6-6-06 BY WAY OF NEWCASTLE01.would i still give this a perfect rating?HELL YEAH!i still cant get over how good this beer is.and i still have one more bottle.

UPDATED: JUL 29, 2007 This is a beer that makes itself want to rerate every other beer. I had this at a tasting in Atlanta. Slightly chilled from Room temp in a Three Philosophers Snifter WOW is all I say! Stout color is there with little head. At 10 % The Trolls in the Stout barrels release flavors unknown to any other stout. I;ve had the breakfast stout and I know this sounds crazy but the vanilla bean coffee, chocolate fades into a Bourbon Frappucino. Thats What I taste. I am a brewer and Have made imperial stouts that blow my mind but I have no clue how this is done. All i have to say is Best american beer ever for me now.!!!!
5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 carlb (62) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - APR 3, 2010
Pours a beautiful silky, dense, black that absorbs all light. A thick, creamy head forms. The nose is firmly chocolate, bourbon, smoke, layered with notes of vanilla and dried fruits. The palate is rich with a medium-full body, with intense lingering of bourbon, chocolate malt, smoke and vanilla. Attractive lacing. This stout makes me smile. Definitely moreish! Reverence and dedication to sensory exploration is a must. This is not a quaffing ale but a serious sipper for pondering and reflection. The alcohol is hidden behind the richness. With dessert or after dinner or whenever you have time to spare and enjoy.

pours a thick used motor oil black with a nice looking and huge two finger fluffy black brown head. aroma is bourbon, sweet chocolate, and some coffee. has a heavy body with great lacing and a bit of carbonation. flavor is the same as aroma but stronger, and in the aftertaste the chocolate is more bitter bakers chocolate and cocoa powder. has a little dry aftertaste and the 10% abv is well hidden. a superb stout!! it is somewhat oily and creamy on the palate and is a little sticky on the fingers and lips. every flavor sticks to the tongue for a while and as it warms a little more the aroma does get stronger. i could only drink one of these in one sitting though.

Bottle brought out as a surprise during Founders event at South Philadelphia Taproom. And what a surprise it was! Pours pitch black with thin coffee colored head. Excellent aroma which is dominated by bourbon and oak but not too much so that you cant’t detect the chocolate and roasted coffee. I smelled this beer for several minutes before sampling it. This beer is very smooth considering it’s complexity and ABV. Lots of bourbon and oak flavor, roasted coffee maltiness, vanilla, chocolate candi sugar and caramel. Excellent!

UPDATED: APR 17, 2009 Black-purple oats meal their way through the bitter dark coffee-vanilla-chocolate frapalocaccino. As the thin head slowly fades I think back to previous drinks. You were so lovely the first time I met you, you’re lovely (08)... now you come back, more refined less vanilla, but more refined. mature (09)... screw it, you’re the perfect beer im giving you a 5.
