sneagrams3 (1464), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Aug 12, 2007 12oz bottle. Syrupy sweet aromas exploading from the bottle. Pours opaque brown with a slight ring of tan head. Big nose, big oaky vanilla nose. Woody, vanilla frosting, coffee and toffee. Slight anise soy acidic undertones. Full bodied with big bold flavors. Sticky smooth but with bitter coffee acidity and bitter alcohol. Finish is cloying and lingering with a moderate tingling effervescence. Initial malty toffee flavors mingled in with black cherries and prunes. Coffee chocolate flavors. Toasty malts. Big lingering burn. This packs quite the smack in the grill. I’m totally impressed with this brew, as well as most similar examples of this style. But, the more of these barrel aged monsters that I try, I realize that BA is not really my thing. That being said, this is still a tremendous libation. Great overt flavors, yet still adequately melded. Silky body with hotflashes af alcohol and bitter burnt acidity. Proper temperature, proper glassware, proper propaganda. Cheers
BigBang (165), Indiana, USA Dec 3, 2008 2008 bottle.
Pours oily thick with very little caramel head. Good lacing.
Aroma is first bourbon, coffee.
Flavor is bourbon, coffee, cocoa, roasted malt, a little hot. A little bitter.
Mouthfeel is thinner than expected. Mild carbonation. Doesnt coat the mouth as much yet it sits on your tongue for a while and drives home the strong bourbon and coffee flavors and ends bitter.
dalekliz (292), San Diego, California, USA Nov 20, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep black with a small tan head that fades to a ring. Rich aroma, of sweet burnt toasted malt, wood, bourbon, dark fruits, and coffee. Huge taste, of burnt, toasted malt, coffee, chocolate, dark fruits, caramel, vanilla, and ends with bourbon and wood flavors. Lingering wood, coffee and malt richness. Incredibly rich and amazing taste. MrChopin (247), Pennsylvania, USA Nov 18, 2008 Thanks to Fantomas23 for the bottle!
Black with a rich dark tan head. You can still find some of the breakfast elements here. The bourbon gives the coffee nose a nutty quality, some wood. Flavor has more wood and bourbon, and the roast is largely more of a factor. A little milk chocolate as well. The mouth rather thin. Overall good, the barrel mellows some of the vegetal bite of the normal breakfast, but it’s still not very complex. omhper (10950), Stockholm, Sweden Nov 17, 2008 Bottled, thanks Marsblursi! Black as a November night in hell. Pale brown head. Strong coffee aroma. Sweet and a bit syrupy. There are lots of coffee - vanilla and oak is there to a lesser extent. The mouthfeel is clean and the sweetness quite severe, which limits my enjoyment. The bourbon is balanced, but I find the the malt structure not really to be up to the very high rating. HonkeyBra (517), Lemont, Illinois, USA Nov 2, 2008 Crushed with TheDude. I’ve been looking forward to him bringing me this one. Nice, motor oil pour. Jet black, with no head, just a ring around the glass that clings and laces. Aroma is coffee, then some chocolate, all with a boozy bourbony undertone. Flavor is sweet, chocolatey with lots of coffee. The bourbon is very understated and lovely, lends a nice vanilla and oak character. Absolutely loved this one.
