Served on tap at the brewpub. Pruny and raisiny malts with caramel undertones. Dark brown-twinged crimson, transparent at the edges. Topped by a healthy dark tan head that receded to a small layer of bubbles. Specks of foam and such were left on the glass. Uber-sweet caramel and fruity malts. Presence of alcohol on the finish. Maltoliciousness. I detected some hints of smokiness and earthy-type flavors as well, but they were lurking in the background. Thickly medium bodied. Bill Madden sez this stuff will improve with age. I can’t wait to see what a few months in the basement will do to this as it’s damn fine already. It’s maybe a tad overly fruity at it’s current age (about a week or so old), so maybe some aging will add some welcome depth. Very drinkable now and oh-so hearty.

Nuffield (3087) - Roseville, Minnesota, USA - SEP 11, 2005
Dark brown, 70% opaque, ruby see-through. Mild but pleasing aroma of grape, lipstick, and only a little of the malts that I wanted to find. Mild flavor as well--some sweetness but thin and not suggesting depth. I really enjoyed some of the founders beers but this was my biggest disappointment. Three words summed up most of this one: grape, sweet, thin. (on tap at brewpub)

scraff (2120) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - AUG 5, 2005
ABV 8%+. Chocolate brown, light tan fizzy head. Up front earthy peaty smoke nose was encompassed by additional soft tones of rich candied dark fruit, caramel and scotch. Flavor was practically one in the same with a super mild hop note that plays out late. Medium to full bodied, light carbonation, rich, malty, peaty finish. Always liked this one from Bill. Get it now, because when it’s gone, it’s gone for good...

Very good scotch ale. Black with a red tint. Malty like an Abt. Thick with a sweet fermenting fruit flavor along with the malt. Aftertaste of the same.

Old Dominion Brew Fest 2005. Wow, looks like a DoppelBock, Very nice example and 8.5% can’t go wrong there.

This one sampled to an aroma of a slight caskiness with rich malts and decent hoppiness. The appearance is a very dark brown body with a thin white head. The flavor is rich and roasty with some toasted malts. Good grassy hops. It’s rich and yummy. The palate had good carbonation and a medium-full mouthfeel. I liked the Saison better.

A very dark scotch ale, in some ways close to being a very light stout. Syrupy and butterscotch sweet. Has a nice roasty finish.

The beer had a nice dark brown color. The flavors were of equal parts malt and nice fruit flavors. A good light sweet drinking beer

It was very welcome to get the chance to try a beer of this style, as they’re an endangered species in the UK. Dark, rich, red colour. Slightly viscous consistency. I don’t know what the alcohol content is, but it certainly packs a punch. Definitely a big beer. Aroma and flavour are very similar - masses of smoky malt, caramel, hints of coffee and engine oil. Full mouthfeel. Interesting. On tap at the Founders, Alexandria.

Had this on draft at Founders’ on 11/21/04. Ruby to almost black body. Nose is rich malts, molasses, light alcohol, light peatiness and maybe caramel. Taste is more rich malt, light smokiness, molasses, light hops and alcohol notes. Body is a bit thick with light alcohol warming. Smooth nonetheless. Finsihes with more alcohol notes, molasses, and big malts. Nice beer!
