On tap: The aroma consists of moderate pine, grapefruit, faint caramel, and nuts. It’s a dark brown wireless some orange transparency. It has a small beige head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. There is a thin sheet of lacing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of caramel that is quickly dominated by piney and grapefruit hops. There is a touch of roasted nuts in the finish as well. It’s light-medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation.

On draft at Founders on Thursday for the Cellar Raid. The pour is a nice deep reddish brown with a lingering film of head and no lace. The aroma is pretty hoppy. There is a touch of caramel malt and a nice floral hop bringing it up in the back end. Normally I’m not too crazy about hoppy browns, but this works well. The flavor is really hoppy. This is like drinking a brown colored IPA. The flavor doesn’t really do anything to a brown. The malts are an afterthought and there is a little sweetness on the back end. The mouth feel is what you’d expect. Thin and light with a light carbonation, and it drinks like an IPA. Wish it was more like a sweet caramel brown. Interesting, yet not quite my thing.

Draft at Capone’s several times during Philly Beer week. Poured dark brown with tan head. Nose was brown sugary Munich malt, cacao, fine tobacco, figgy fruit. Tastes malty and figgy, with backup hops. Good complexity and great flavor in this one.

Dark brown with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of pine, floral hops, tobacco, caramel, resin, and light vanilla. Taste of caramel, roast, pine resin, tobacco, and a semi-sweet finish.

On tap at Capones, poured a cloudy deep amber color. Head and lacing were on the small side. Aromas of pine, caramel and chocolate malts, grapefruit. Taste is a citrus explosion controlled by a brown sugar, cocoa character mixed throughout. Impressively hopped and juicy for a brown ale. Some further notes of smoke, grape, and roasted barley. Great brown ipa from Founders.

On tap at Capone’s. Pours a medium brown color with a thin off-white head. Some spotty lacing. The nose brings strong pine and earth with a moderate amount of semi-sweet brown malt and a higher amount of lightly-roasty malt. The flavor offers a good balance between slight roast and toast plus some piney and earthy hops. The hops dominate, but the malt provides a nice backbone in a way that works here that wouldn’t with a traditional IPA. Good balance all around. Strong hops in the finish. Quite solid.
