Pours silky black with a creamy tan head. The nose is sweet with strong chocolate and caramel malt presence. No absence of hops gives Founders’ robust porter the full flavor you deserve and expect. Cozy like velvet. It’s a lover, not a fighter.

Bottle. Pours black with a finger of brown head. Aroma is major chocolate with some hoppy floral notes in the background. Taste is full of dark chocolate and has some decent hop bite on the finish. The palate is pretty full and creamy. This may be my favorite porter and you have to love the price point.

The aroma is charred wood, black coffee, over roasted malt. The flavor base is much the same. The palate is smooth if not slightly watery. The finish is powerful and bitter, coating the mouth with an alcoholic roasted malt flavor. Some distant chocolate notes on the finish. A one dimensional porter, not horrible but there are much better out there. Over rated.

UPDATED: APR 11, 2016 Pours from the bottle a deep chocolate brown with a light brown, brief head. The smell hints at chocolate and coffee, and the taste has more of the same with some tones of dark cherry. This stuff is tasty. I’d drink it again. Edit: 2016 revision ... I first reviewed this four years ago. I drink it all the time now. This beer is one of the reasons that porter is my favorite beer style. Every time I think I understand the style, I revisit some porter that I like and find that not only do I not understand the style, I don’t even understand individual good porters. The best porters are like albums that still sound new years later. This is such an album.

From a bottle to a nonic pint glass. Pours very dark brown with light ruby coloring. One finger tan head that quickly shrinks. Nice lacing. Aroma is smoked malt, coffee, and roasted barley. Flavor is rich coffee and chocolate, smoke, roasted barley, and a slight hop balance. Medium mouthfeel and flavor clings to your tongue. This beer is in my top 3 porters easily.

Coffee smoked and chocolate aromas poured with very slight head that dissipated quickly otherwise pitch black. Coffee and chocolate flavors pronounced light sweetness with a medium bitter very well balanced medium body somewhat sticky. Very good Porter that lives up to the hype

Pours a pitch black with a dark tan head. Aroma is lighter of chocolate and coffee. Taste is so much more sufficient than the first aroma impressions. Coffee and chocolate abound with a very robust taste. Very taste. Extremely smooth, oily, and a bit bitter. Lighter body. It is actually a bit watery, but the flavors remain strong throughout drinking. It all lasts very well in the aftertaste. I really like this one.

UPDATED: MAY 5, 2012 Aroma is rich coffee, roasted malts, cocoa, vanilla and some alcohol. Taste follows suit, but is much weaker than aroma. Predominantly a mild bitter coffee and roasted malts. Very easy to drink and smooth but I wanted more. Palate is thin with some carbonation I think. Overall a nice beer, very solid.

Bottle @ Olympen, Oslo Fall 2011. Dark pour with light tan head. Roasted malts and chocolate, most obvious, subtle vanilla. Dry, malty, bitter, high carbonation relative to style, decent body but feels like it could be meatier.

Tap. Very dark with thin cocoa-like head. Smells roasty with a chocolate note and perhaps coffee too. Nice roasty flavor with an almost herbaceous end note. Nice and dry. A bit carbonated- not as soft a some porters, but still pretty light.

UPDATED: OCT 4, 2012 Pitch black pour with a nice beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate. Taste is amazing. Lots of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and some vanilla. Very nice thick mouthfeel. A great spicy and slightly bitter finish makes it stand out from other porters. Just great. I really love this porter.
