Lovely beer. Pitch black, tan head. Very roasted nose and the flavor follows suit--espresso, dark chocolate, caramel. A slightly sweet finish. Soft carbonation. Excellent.

Bottled 355ml. Appearance: It pours a pitch black beer with a decent sized bubbly dark deep beige head. Good retention and average lacework. Aroma: licquorice allsorts, basil, ashes, fudge, vanilla and coffee showing up. Roasty and hoppy. Mint sneaking in. Rather inviting. Taste and palate: Full bodied with a good bitterness. Low carbonation. Faintly warming on the swallow. Impressive malt profile. Ashes are rather present. Chocolatey. Very dry finish which is reminiscent of eucalyptus, pine needles, strong coffee and basil. Overall impression: Full bodied; rather bitter for the style in my opinion and possesing strong flavors. A very powerful and quite pleasant porter.

Pours black with an appropriately sized chocolate colored head. Very nice lacing and slight carbonation. The aroma is very strong: chocolate, roasted barley, and a little bit of coffee. Taste is the same as the aroma except not as strong on the coffee and heavier on the chocolate and roasted malts. I’m a huge fan of porters and stouts and this is one of the best ones I’ve ever had.

Aroma of dark chocolate, fresh coffee and almonds. Appearance is black with tan head. Flavor matches the nose, but with some chicory flavors apparent as the beer warms. Smoked malt flavors in the finish. Palate is creamy and bubbly. Outstanding Porter.

Bottle purchased from Siciliano’s market in Grand Rapids, Mich. Poured into a pint glass. Drank while brewing a Founders porter clone. Fantastic aroma of chocolate, malt, cheese, coffee and molasses. Taste-wise, this is one of the best beers I’ve had. Once again, Founders fails to disappoint.
