Pours silky black with a creamy tan head. The nose is sweet with strong chocolate and caramel malt presence. No absence of hops gives Founders’ robust porter the full flavor you deserve and expect. Cozy like velvet. It’s a lover, not a fighter.

Too often in a fit of “oh shit the baby’s going to wake up, poop everywhere and need to be changed, fed and played with” I don’t let the beer mellow, to come down a few degrees. I started this review in haste before deciding to take my own advice. Glad I did.

STYLE: American Porter

ABV: 6.5%

LOOK: Unremarkable, the midpoint between oily and soda. An appalling lack of lacing. What head?

NOSE: We’re off to a rather good start. Over a foot away, I can smell the chocolate and red fruits as it pours. Better as it warms. Smoother too. We’ve gone from metallic to mid-range coffee.

MOUTH: It settles into coffee and lightly burnt malts. Not the extraordinary failure I thought it was at first. Medium body, dirty, barn doors, green pear. It has to be sessionable, but not because the ABV is relatively low. It simply lacks something robust, be it flavor or texture.

Aroma: Toasted and roasted malts with hints of nuttiness. Appearance: Mahogany with rocky tan head. Taste: Light sweetness throughout with hints of bitterness at the edges. Palate: Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, sweet finish. Overall: A rich, deep beer with lots of flavor. Very nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The hops in this porter are a great compliment otherwise I wouldn't score it as high. Chocolate on the nose and a rich, dark chocolate, velvety taste. Overall a pretty damn good porter. One of my go to's. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Not much head. Pleasant chocolate and maybe yeasty aroma. Good malty flavor well balanced with just enough hops.

The aroma is burnt malt, coffee, chocolate, and hops. The appearance is dark dark dark brown with a small head. The taste is like the aroma and quite bitter without much sweetness. The palate is smooth. Overall a good example of the style, it’s definitely quality, but it’s not sweet enough and personally I think it’s overrated.

Bottle poured TJ's....pours dark as night, brownish black. Not much head. Aroma is chocolate, and lesser coffee. Some kind of dark fruit. First sip tasty, bubbly but not too much. Aftertaste of dark chocolate, clean palate. Hoppiness makes this a great porter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
