COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pours silky black with a creamy tan head. The nose is sweet with strong chocolate and caramel malt presence. No absence of hops gives Founders’ robust porter the full flavor you deserve and expect. Cozy like velvet. It’s a lover, not a fighter.

Too often in a fit of “oh shit the baby’s going to wake up, poop everywhere and need to be changed, fed and played with” I don’t let the beer mellow, to come down a few degrees. I started this review in haste before deciding to take my own advice. Glad I did.

STYLE: American Porter

ABV: 6.5%

LOOK: Unremarkable, the midpoint between oily and soda. An appalling lack of lacing. What head?

NOSE: We’re off to a rather good start. Over a foot away, I can smell the chocolate and red fruits as it pours. Better as it warms. Smoother too. We’ve gone from metallic to mid-range coffee.

MOUTH: It settles into coffee and lightly burnt malts. Not the extraordinary failure I thought it was at first. Medium body, dirty, barn doors, green pear. It has to be sessionable, but not because the ABV is relatively low. It simply lacks something robust, be it flavor or texture.

Bottle - pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is rich chocolate, some sweetness, soy sauce and roast malt. Taste is roast malt, chocolate up front, then a dry lingering roast malt finish. Creamy full palate.

This one has a great body and slick chocolatey flavor but it does suffer from some metallic, copper overtones that don’t give it the robust flavor I look for in a porter. The carbonation is somewhat lacking too.

Poured from a bottle. Substantial off-white head that lasts quite awhile, some decent lacing. Dark chocolate brown. Delicious chocolate aroma, and the taste includes chocolate, cherry, and vanilla. Creamy rich texture. Tastes stronger than a 6.5% ABV, which is a good thing.

355ml bottle. Pours a thick dark brown with a fine mocha head of larger central bubbles. Smooth chocolate, coffee, and sugary cream on the nose. Possesses a decided initial milkiness, followed by bitter coffee and 90% chocolate richness. Dry mouthfeel. Very enjoyable, with an overall smooth blend of flavours.

355ml bottle from The Perfect Pour. Pours opaque black with a medium brown head. Aroma is sweet, chocolate, hints of coffee. Initial hit of sweetness upon tasting, met quickly by a balancing bitterness, similar notes coming through.

Pint on tap at Kloster, Madrid. Pours blackest pitch black, dark tan thick head. Aroma is mainly espresso coffee (would be nice to match them). Also hints of smoke, soil and pure cocoa. Silky and oily, rich and well-balanced. Long nice finish, with the right bitterness.

Smell of chocolate, licorice. Black colour, high dark brown head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, tar, ash. Ashy and slightly dry palate. Bitter. Mid-heavy body, could be expected to be heavier. Soft carbon. Very nice and balanced.

12 oz bottle: Dark brown color with a tan head. Dark chocolate powder aroma. Roasted hazelnut, lightly burnt caramel flavor. Pretty light body and a crisp carbonation, a little too crisp and light. Decent.

Drinking 355ml bottle on Kvittfjell in Norway. Dark almost black color with a light brown foam. Seems to be a bit of a metallic smell to it, but I find a lot of chocolate and nutty aromas as well. The roasted notes in the taste are pleasant and you got a very long aftertaste with a smooth bitterness. I also taste some cherry and dried fruits. I could imagine this beer will only improve if stored for a longer period of time.
