2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Too often in a fit of “oh shit the baby’s going to wake up, poop everywhere and need to be changed, fed and played with” I don’t let the beer mellow, to come down a few degrees. I started this review in haste before deciding to take my own advice. Glad I did.
STYLE: American Porter
LOOK: Unremarkable, the midpoint between oily and soda. An appalling lack of lacing. What head?
NOSE: We’re off to a rather good start. Over a foot away, I can smell the chocolate and red fruits as it pours. Better as it warms. Smoother too. We’ve gone from metallic to mid-range coffee.
MOUTH: It settles into coffee and lightly burnt malts. Not the extraordinary failure I thought it was at first. Medium body, dirty, barn doors, green pear. It has to be sessionable, but not because the ABV is relatively low. It simply lacks something robust, be it flavor or texture.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Totally dark with a small, olive brown head and decent lacing. Rich aroma brings together roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, caramel and dark fruit. Woodsy flavor with hints of caramel, coffee, tobacco and black licorice. Semi-sweet chocolate shines in the aftertaste. Full bodied, moderately carbonated mouthfeel with a long lasting finish.

Dark dark. No transparency at all. Full and rich aroma. Grand Rapids masters composed this porter anthem. Divine!

A little stronger than I’d expected. I don’t know why I’d felt this way. I think I’ll try it again sometime

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
The old-timey photo designs on Founders’ bottles have always frightened me, but the stately lady in black is a perfect match for this brew. This porter pours like ink and is nearly opaque when held up to light. Head is chocolate brown. Roasted malt, cocoa, and soy sauce in the aroma. Taste is roasted and bittersweet. There are subtle notes of umami and dark chocolate. An American style hop finish cuts through the richness and adds a little spice to the otherwise exceptionally smooth body. In short, this is an extremely classy porter.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Black beer with a strong light brown coloured head. The aroma is lightly roasted, and the flavour is well roasted and bitter with a degree of maltiness. Overall a nice porter.
