argo0 (6019), Washington DC, USA May 30, 2008 (growler, thanks ryan) Small tan head atop cola black body. Aroma is medium sweet, chocolate, roast, cocoa, light caramel, coffee. Taste is moderately sweet, bittersweet chocolate, coffee/roast, some floral/earthy. Medium body, some stickiness. Rastacouere (5202), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Mar 14, 2005 Typical dark brown body wears a faint tan head. Rich dark malt aroma emanates from the bottle. Sweet coffeish nature is enhanced by a beany vegetal profile that fits well. Fitting generous, yet smooth roastiness reveals chocolatey and mellow vanilla undertones. Perfect porter mouthfeel, soft yet supported carbonation. Cocoa and chocolate interplays are accompanied by a light dose of lactic acid, well contained surprisingly. Ample hops fortunately do not create a spoiling citric aspect. Suggestion of smokle and beans add to its charms. I do pretty much agree with what’s been said already, this is a top quality porter, were I judging based on style, this would get close to full marks besides appearance, but I’m not and porters rarely excite me. I do appreciate the balance and texture, but it’s not a beer I would go far with. CaptainCougar (4601), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jan 28, 2003 Roasted chocolatey nose hovering above the rich black body. The initial flavor is somewhat unnoticeable, covered by the robust palate which finishes smooth and malty with almost a burnt aftertaste. Goes down remarkably smooth for its viscosity. A very good porter. hopscotch (4386), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Apr 24, 2005 Bottle... This beer rocks!... Pitch black ale with a sizeable, tan head. Chocolate, pistachio & vanilla nose. Chocolate, prune and molasses flavor while shying away from the typically associated sweetness. Full-bodied and silky with mild carbonation. Lengthy, coffee/chocolate finish. Another world class brew from Founders! MartinT (4241), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Feb 28, 2005 Updated: Mar 14, 2005The Lure: Rich roasted malt and subterrean hoppiness converge, happily. Obviously, something luxuriant thrives within.
The Festivities: A joyously plump body of roasted malt and citrusy hoppiness creates some acidity in the back. Nothing is overstated, everything performs beautifully and coherently.
Transcendence: A worn-out workman slams the door after a hard day and heads for the fridge, on a mission.
