Pours silky black with a creamy tan head. The nose is sweet with strong chocolate and caramel malt presence. No absence of hops gives Founders’ robust porter the full flavor you deserve and expect. Cozy like velvet. It’s a lover, not a fighter.

Bottle. Oily black pour with a tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, hazlenut, roasted malt, earthy hops, toffee and coffee. Flavors of rich dark chocolate, booze soaked dark fruits, coffee, caramel, bitter/earthy undertones. Thick body, rich/roasty/bittersweet and satisfying throughout with a bitter/roast finish. Overall, there are two porters that tie for my favorite and they are both from MI: this and Darkhorse Special Black Bier. They both kind of go beyond of what I usually get from this style. This is one amazing brew, there’s lots of beers double in strength that fail to capture its focus and flavor.

bottle at home from trade with Saeglopur, many thanks Thomas :) BB-date not readable anymore. black color, looks a bit oily. small dark coffee-colored head. strong smell of chocolate, cacao, coffee, vanilla, smells creamy, very very light malty roasty smell. medium body, very soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel, light oily. tastes malty roasty, coffee roast, some chocolate, light sour and some light smoke, some citric notes, astringent. quite dry / roasty bitter finish. aftertaste of coffee and chocolate. wow drinks very nice, just the finish is a tad too dry. apart from that great beer.

Bottle- pours silky blackish brown, fluffy khaki head recedes to a permanent ring. Cocoa, coffee, some pine and oak on the nose. Velvety mouthfeel with rustic oak, roasted chocolate malts, vanilla and subtle caramel malt sweetness finished with a rounded hop bitterness. So smooth and tasty. Poured from tap a black with off white head and lace. Chocolate aroma and taste with a burnt note. Just the right amount of bitter. Good carbonation makes for a nice creamy head and body. Well done.

Really surprising that I haven’t rated this one. It strikes me as heavier than a typical porter, and has a great mouthfeel. Roasted and plenty of chocolate. Obvious burnt notes. Popular at the tasting I hosted. Bottle.

Tap at Imperial Bottle Shop, post CBC A: Pitch black with a creme ring of head. N: Coffee, cocoa, biscuit, some vanilla, and a hearty woodiness. Peppercorn and earth. T: Sweet, roasty body, with solid bitterness to balance. M: Light body, creamy carbonation, no alcohol presence. O: Quintessential porter. This is a proper go-to, along with the Imperial Stout, for Founders, IMO.
