4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Madtown1 (13) - Wisconsin, USA - NOV 10, 2011
A bit dated from my notes...
A: Dark amber, brownish....poured with an off white head.
S: A citrus hoppy aroma, full of rye over the top, very inviting!
T: Piney-spruce, with the rye taste right behind it, then the bitterness hits. Sweet with a tart/bitter finish.
M: Light mouthfeel...excellent carbonabtion
O: A great combination of flavors that come together in this brew.

Very good rye pale ale. Crisp clean ale with a very nice spicy hop aroma.

Pours a nice dark amber with a thick, 1/8" head. Aroma of hops and rye. Delicious smooth taste with a good mouth feel for the hoppiness. Medium bodied. I’m not a big rye fan, but this is good.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter. Appearance is a dark, hazy amber color with a thick head of light orange foam. Aroma is piney, spicy, and a touch sweet. Taste is super piney, with sap-esque undertones and a spicy, earthy hop bitterness that makes the beer very easy to drink. Mouthfeel is dry and sticky with light to medium body and a long bitter finish. This is a pretty good beer.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 doughanson78 (5) - Everett, Washington, USA - OCT 21, 2011 does not count
Ar: Mainly citrus and pine hops, with neither dominating. Good caramel malt backbone. Has some slight grassy/earthy/rye notes
Ap: Darker orange with a slight red tint. Half finger slightly off white head with OK retention and decent lacing.
T: Nice caramel upfront. Piney, citrusy hops in the middle with slight earthy notes and a touch of rye. The rye really comes through in the end and aftertaste. Not real bitter or spicy. Well balanced all the way through.
P: Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Not real crisp or dry or refreshing.
O: I’m not a big rye fan but this is a pretty good one. What else would I expect from founders? Drinkable and good but I wouldn’t buy it for my tastes.

A nice looking dark dark-redish pour with thin head. Tastes of caramel and decent level of hops. Another good offering from Founders.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 dfhhead25 (154) - Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 14, 2011
Aroma- caramel, hops, malt, spices
Appearance- deep blood orange, thing white head, adequate lacing
Taste- sweet hops, floral hops, caramel, astringency, spices, copper?
Palate- syrupy, medium-full bodied
Overall- Somewhat disappointed in this one. It lacks the "wow" ingredient, which is probably a sweetness of some sorts. Just relative and boring for the most part in my opinion.

Pours hazy reddish dark copper with a fair tan head. Aroma is of citrus and floral hops and some caramel and sweet malts. Great hop profile, a little caramel, sweet malts, nice level of bitterness with a sweet, spicy finish.

12 ounce bottle purchased at Bruisin’ Ales in Asheville, North Carolina ($2.00). Pours a rusty red hue with two fingers of frothy off-white foam. Aroma of citrusy and grassy hops, caramel malts, and quite a bit of peppery and spicy rye graininess. Flavor has more citrus-earthy hoppiness and peppery-spicy rye balanced nicely with a good dose of caramel. Also has a hint of brewed tea in the taste. Finishes moderately bitter. A very nicely put together rye beer. (1141, 618)
