4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Reid (1434) - Salem,Oregon, Oregon, USA - MAR 21, 2005
From a 12 oz short necked brown bottle.
Very nice looking beer, i decided to use my Chimay chalice, dark, deep, luxuriant ruby red, slightly hazy with a nice sized light tan head, that dissapeared fast leaveing lashings of lace down the chalice.
Quite a hoppy aroma, almost as spicy as the typical American IPA,nice and invigorating.
mmm i like the taste, nice smooth sweetness at first then overwhelmed by the bitter/peppery hops witha touch of what I imagine to be rye on the sides of the tongue, this all blends in quite well leaving a good impression.
Very very nice feel on the palate, luxuriant and creamy smooth but packing a potent "zing".
Very drinkable ale, If I could get this in Oregon ,it would be a regular in my fridge
Thanks to Jah Noth for this excellent ale!

Interesting beer. The smell is nothing new with hops dominating but the body was fuller than I expected yet the taste lighter than the thick pour and deep color would imply. sweet malts balance out an initial hop onslaught but not balanced enough from start to finish. Maybe if I let it warm some... For now this is one of those beers where the complexities come at you in waves, first hops then some interesting sweet malts then a bitter lingering finish that bespeaks of the rye. This is only my second Founders brew rating and I’ve been short-selling myself to have not been trying more. To say they know what they are doing would be a vast understatement.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 ChazyRPh (577) - Chazy, New York, USA - MAR 16, 2005
bottle...deep garnet red pour with a nice frothy tan head, nice lacing. Floral hop aromas. Very well balanced, hoppy to start, then sweetening out in the middle with the malts and then bittering and spicy to finish. This is almost the best balance for me, as I enjoy the bittering finish and a little sweetness. A masterpiece from Founders...I can’t wait to try the Black Rye.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 roacheater (39) - USA - MAR 15, 2005
UPDATED: MAY 24, 2005 It really does qualify as a true "American Strong Ale." The category is nebulous but the brew is not. Well defined and consistent it is. Which is something Founder’s has difficulty achieving at times. It is unique and almost undefinable until tasted. Much like Founder’s Centennial IPA it is very difficult to describe in relative terms because the flavor is so unique. But unlike the Centennial IPA, Red’s doesn’t have the quality control problems. When the Centennial is on it’s one of the very best, but when it’s off it’s undrinkable (stale, sour tasting, or even worse, totally blown CO2-wise... hmm, very unusual in a "modern" brew). Red’s hasn’t suffered from any of these nonsensicalities. Red’s Rye is good swag.

I hav found I am very partial to rye ale and this is a very good beer. this reminds me of Bears Hop Rod Rye as the rye gives this a level above other red ales. Full of flavor with an almost medicinal hop twange. Hop flavor, rye aroma and taste, with a memory that will last a long time this is a beer that will call me for a long time.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 JMerritt (1592) - Macomb, Illinois, USA - MAR 13, 2005
Sampled at Peoria Int’l Beer Festival. Dark orange in color, clear, with a small light-brown head. Orange citrus aroma. Moderately bitter flavor, extremely IPA-ish, until the rye and wheat notes pop at the tail end of the flavor. Finishes bitter and slightly grainy.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 MIBRomeo (2108) - Wisconsin, USA - MAR 12, 2005
a deep red color w/ a big off white head.. A big grass hop and molasis aroma. The palate was rich and mildly creamy. Flavor was citrus and carmel a hint of alcohol in the finish as it warmed and a touch of something fruity. Overall a very well done beer.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 goldtwins (4320) - Nesconset, New York, USA - MAR 11, 2005
Poured a dark hazy red with a large light tan head. Huge citrus aroma with sweet malt in the background. Caramel and cirtus hop flavors with a long lightly bitter finish. Light to medium bodied with a full long flavor. Very tasty.
4.3 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Braudog (4607) - Hampton, Virginia, USA - MAR 9, 2005
Poured beautifully ... deep red with a waterfall cascade of a head that stayed airy and stuck to the glass. The aroma is grand ... like a blooming citrus grove. This is flavorful, yet restrained, with a floral hop burst up front, but a settling fruit salad bitterness to finish.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Metalhead (607) - Lake Zurich, Illinois, USA - MAR 8, 2005
Pours color of tea with small head. Leaves lacing on glass. Aroma is a nice mix of mild hops and malty sweetness. Tastes like it smells but a citrus tang at the end. Tasty.
