4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: APR 11, 2005 bottle to shaker from Crane Alley, Urbana-Champagne, IL / wow, really good! reminded me of a heavier, more fuller, Brian Boru Old Irish Red from Three Floyds. definitely a dry, bready, raw, rye bite, with a pretty orange citrusy hop punch. UPDATE 4/11/05: tulip / uprated aroma. delicious.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle: Beautiful ruby color with a small, creamy tan head that slowly fades to a ring around the outside of the glass. Aroma is strong hops - citrus, grapefruit, floral grass, orange, light caramel. Taste is initially sweet grapefruit, flowery hops, then steeped malts, caramel, pine, and spices with a nice sweetness towards the middle. Finishes mildly spicy, dry, with notes of floral hops and bitter malt. Medium bodied, but nice creamy, full mouth feel. Nicely balanced throughout.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Why had I been putting off getting this??? Seemed generic when compared to the Breakfast Stout and Devil Dancer I suppose. Poured out a very deep amber red color. Tannish head with a touch of red in it. Nice lacing. Aroma is a mix of malty sweetness, pine and floral hop notes. Nice medium body. Very well balanced. Somewhat sweet and drying. Flavor mixes piney hops and sweet caramel malts together quite well. Lingering hops in finish. Quite well done!!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap: Ruby red with initial large frothy head which fades to a ring, produced some lace. The aroma has major notes of scotch pine, grapefruit, roasted malts, caramel and a floral quality. Picked up some clove and cardamom as well. The taste is a bit bitter, hops are to the forefront but the large grist bill keeps them in check and added a nice sweetness midsection. The finish has a spicy note, some lingering bitters, and the one place to find a hint of the rye. The feel us aggressive and sharp, slightly metallic and chalky, refreshing enough. Overall, this is one solid beer and yet again an offering from the most improved brewery in America (not that they were bad to begin with). Recommended.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Just had the blackrye ale, so now its time for the red I figure. Color is a deep red and a thin head on top. Aroma is like an IPA, strong citrus and floral notes. Flavor is a good blend of sweet malt caramel flavor and hop bitterness. The palate leans more towards the strong bite side at the end, but begins more tame. Another quality brew by founders. I expect the IPA to be just as tastey now.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours a deep, glowing ruby red color with a huge frothy off white head that leave a thick sticky lacing in my glass. Aromatic hoppy aromas of pineapple, grapefruit and pine. Resiny pine, citrus and pineapple cake flavors, medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel, finishes bitter and dry. I think I may have found a new favorite from this brewery, this one is very drinkable at 6.8%.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dirty bloody mary. Thin off-white fizzy head. West coast hop aroma with fruity tomatoes. Taste has a hoppy and rye-like fleshy orange and fleshy concord grape predominance. Late finish has concord grape skins. Good stuff.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Hazy red-brown body with a spectacular thick, rocky long-lasting tan head. Fresh citrusy hop aroma with pine sap and sticky caramel accents. I was hoping for some rye in the aroma but no luck. Thick resinous hops coat the tongue with roasty, spicy rye notes on top. Caramel backbone throughout. Iíd like to age this stuff, the hop bite is pretty sharp, but maybe the malt isnít big enough to come forward. Regardless, this stuff is damn tasty.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
The aroma is of limes and grapefruit with a hint of rye. It is stong and lasting. :)
The appearance is a diminishing head with good lacing. It is a fizzy looking head like cola. The body is a clear and sparkling red-brown.
The flavor is of hoopy grapefruit marmalade and light rye toast. White pepper? Hint of Bombay Sapphire? The flavor is very lively and is well backed by the palate. It is lightly bitter with a acidic finish.
The palate is VERY lively with a medium to light body that is watery and crisp.
Overall, I couldnít ask for a better red ale.
I picked this up at Grapes & Grain in Mequon.
