12 oz. bottle, pours a hazy red / dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma of rye malt, citrus hops, dry caramel malt, spices and some sweetness. Flavour of dry caramel malt, rye, dry berries, and harsh bitterness from the hops. Finishes with pungent rye, harsh hoppy bitterness and lots of dry caramel / berries. Very well-made - essentially an IPA.

Aroma of hops, sweet grapefruit. Appearance is amber leaning toward red, one-finger head and opaque. Taste of hop bitterness, on the sweet end to start and finishing bitter. The flavor sticks around for a while. Overall, I was expecting it to be bland but got a full flavor out of it. I would drink it again.

UPDATED: MAY 25, 2012 Wonderfully balanced. The rye is definitely there, but it’s combined nicely with other sweet Belgian malts. Good Amarillo hop character, too. One of the top beers I sampled, regardless of style, at the Sep. 24th Mactoberfest in Neosho, MO.
3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Chrisxx25 (57) - - MAY 5, 2012
Pours a tan brown with highlights of ruby. Aroma of pine and citrus hops. Even some floral hops. Lemon, sweet malts and I think I can smell rye. Taste is a gush of juicy hops at first. Pine hops, floral and plenty of grapefruit. Some sweet fruit, maybe apricot. A bit metallic on finish ar points but nothing overwhelming. Plenty of rye bread that sticks on the tongue forever. Nice amount of carbonation. Not a fan at first, but it completely grew on me. Founders is awesome.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Steve_0 (201) - Denver, Colorado, USA - MAY 5, 2012
Poured a very murky, deep amber, with little-to-no head. Smell is caramel, rye, bread, pine, and grass. Taste is very malt forward at first, with caramel and rye on the forefront, but ends moderately bitter with grassy hops on the finish. The mouthfeel is very sticky, almost mouth-coating and bitterness that continues to linger. Very well-balanced; a delicious hoppy rye/amber/pale ale, whatever it is, it’s tasty.

Bottle at the Bridgeville Beer tasting on 04/27/12. Excellent! A contradiction of a beer (in a good way). Orange sweetness in scent in taste up front; then a bitter grass hop finish. Syrupy copper pour, but a medium crisp palate.

12 oz. bottle from Bev4less. Pours a reddish-amber with a tan head that fades to some lacing on the edges. aroma is nice with a lot of rye spiciness, sourdough, citrus, floral hops, and some caramel malts. flavor is bold with baked sourdough bread, rye spiciness, citrus and floral hops, some spruce, caramel malts, some sweet Belgian malts, and some earthiness. Has a medium-full body with a creamy mouthfeel and a semi dry, spicy, slightly bitter finish. overall, I was really impressed by this one, my first Founders beer. Its definitely a excellent rye ale.
