3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Onenote81 (902) - Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA - APR 24, 2012
Originally reviewed: 8/12/09. This beer pours a dark copper gold with a thin tan head on top. Little retention, but there is plenty of lacing all over the glass. Smells of sweet sugary malts, rye bread, and citrus hops. Very nice smelling beer.
The mouth is decent with a good amount of carbonation and crispness. This is a very good beer. Big malty sweetness starts the beer off, but this gives way to a nice mellow bitterness. Lots of caramel, bitter rye, and finishes toasty and bready. I dig this. I guess there’s a a Red’s Rye and a Red’s Rye P.A., I wonder how different they are. Recommend.

A very nice appearance. Cloudy, dark red, thick head that stays a while. Earthy, bready aroma. Can really smell the rye through the floral hops. A great spicy rye taste that is nicely balanced with the hoppiness, bitterness, and malt. Probably my favorite rye pa. I drink this all the time.

One of my favorite rye beers. Was number 1 prior to Siera Nevada’s Ruthless Rye.
One of Founders better beers, if not their best.
Aroma is sweet. Taste is great but a little bitter, but nothing to prevent you from enjoying it and having a second it third.

Picked this up at the Whole Foods in the Bowery New York City. Pours red/ orange almost muddy brown. Fluffy tan head that recedes rather quickly to a ring with spiderweb lacing left behind on the glass walls. Smells sweet malt and a little hop like. Tastes piney hop itter a little citrus in there as well.

From bottle to tulip. Pours a dark hazy orange with a creamy off-white head. Smells of citrus hops, grapefruit, and bread. Tastes of citrus and floral hops, caramel malt. MF is average with medium carbonation. Overall this was a great rye pale ale, I would happily drink several of these.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 kenjohn (88) - Texas, USA - APR 13, 2012
Pours a hazy amber color with an off white head that settles quickly and forms nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is of hoppy grapefruit, bitter orange, pine, and caramel. Taste is sweet up front with a very intense bitter finish. Medium bodied.

12oz bottle from Rozi’s about 6 months old actually, still smells decent, not hoppy at all.. but now fully balanced.. easy to gulp down and the red looks are pretty good too, spicy rye flavor midway through each sip is okay.

Pairs well with multiple meals. It slightly outside the session realm, but still very refreshing for a rye based beer.

The head was huge, too big. It's a dark amber, very murky. The nose is very malty, and I'm assuming what else I detect is the eye. I don't get any hop aroma, but it is a little fruity. The rye comes in big time in the taste up front, mixing with the malt. Strangely reminds me of apple juice, no idea why. The hops come in at the end, leaving a bitter finish with that apple flavor holding on. Very, very unique. Probably won't have another, not my style.

UPDATED: APR 7, 2012 12 ounce bottle. Light bodied and bright, clear red with plenty of carbonation moving around inside. The rye flavor is big and it pairs up really well with the caramel and sourness. The heavy carbonation helps the flavor bounce around on your tongue. This is a great beer is you like a clearly presented rye aspect in a beer.
