It reminded me of everything going wrong with a hoppy beer. It seemed like the spicy bitterness was the only thing there. Then I realized that it was just my first rye, and could pick up some of the malt and appreciate the rye separately from the hopping. It is a solid beer, and I would definitely have it again. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 14, 2008 No hiding the rye flavor here, its very evident. Though not as refined as Cane & Ebel, robustness abounds. Founders stuff usually gives me a headache, but this didnt do that, which is nice. Very good along food, since it might be hard to just drink alot of these. beerbill (1939), Laurel, New York, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 12, 2008 12 oz. bottle courtesy of Secret Santa. Pours a slightly hazy copper with a moderate off-white head that lasted until the end and left partial lacing on the glass. Very nice juicy aroma of oranges and grapefruit. Interestingly, there is very little citrus in the flavor. Instead, the flavor is malt up front followed by pine and some spice. Then, some rye flavor sneaks in towards the finish. Moderate bitterness at the finish as well. Thank you Santa! ucusty (1880), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jan 6, 2008 Bottle. Pours copper red with thin off-white head. Aroma is very hoppy and spicy, very full, strong and interesting. The flavor is wonderful (though not as good as Cane and Ebel), the rye adds a nice complexity. Pretty spicy and bitter, but maintains a good level of creaminess. Interesting and very drinkable. Goodgrief (1148), Middletown, Delaware, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 1, 2008 Jan 2006 - Pours a reddish color with minimal head and hoppy aroma. The taste was bitter/hoppy with only a slight malt base. I could detect a rye-type taste that was neither pleasant nor unpleasant. Okay to check off a style, but nothing to write home about.
