4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 KickInChalice (772) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 1, 2012
From notes. First reviewed 2/5/2011. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.
This pours a very appealing red amber copper color with a huge 6cm foamy tan head. The head fades to a fluffy cap and a ring, but not without leaving plenty of lacing on the glass.
The aroma is full of grapefruit and tangerine hops, some spicy bitterness, and lots of rye. Some caramel as well.
A brief moment of caramel sweetness in the flavor is followed by a burst of juicy grapefruit hops. A bitterness grows, gaining some supporting citrus hoppiness and spice before meeting a dry, bitter rye head on. The finish is long and dries out my tongue. It cleans up nicely, though, not leaving that much of a bitter aftertaste.
There is great balance between the dryness in the rye and the juicy hop feel. Ultimately I think the rye wins. A fair amount of hop resin remains behind the lips after each sip. This is still very creamy and smooth, with medium carbonation and a medium to full body.
Rye does interesting and wonderful things to beer, and this is no exception. The balance of wet, juicy hops and rye is amazing. Founders executes well, and this is welcome anytime in my fridge.

12oz bottle. A ruby red amber with a beige medium head on the pour. Aroma of rye, some malt, yeast with some earthy floral hops. Taste is rye, earthy resiny hops, malt and yeast. A medium to full body on the palate with a crisp moth feel and lively carbonation. Finish is rye, grains, sweet maltiness, yeast with some nice lingering bitter sweet earthy floral resiny hops ending. A brew overwhelmingly dominated by rye and bitter hops but overall a good drinkable brew.

Bottle pours orange-red with a khaki head. Aroma is floral and sweet with notes of caramel/toffee, peach, apple, and cherry. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of rye, light citrus, and a touch of earth. Overall body is moderate and the finish is moderately bitter.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 joshj2176 (103) - California, USA - FEB 24, 2012
Red color with a nice off-orange head. Rings of lace were present and dense. Nice. Aromas of hops, floral notes, sourness and some malt made the mouth water in anticipation of what was to come. Taste was solid and full; flavors of cooked malts, strong hops and bread notes fused together in beer bliss. A medium bodied mouthfeel fit this brew well. A good level of drinkability
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 high_on_hops (212) - Missouri, USA - FEB 22, 2012
Pours a hazy amber-orange with an off-white head and lots of lacing. The aroma is mainly hops, which are floral and a bit spicy. The taste has a nice malt balance to the hops, along with a spicy and dry finish from the rye.

Pours hazy amber, with minimal tan head. Smells floral, HOPS, and some sweet undertones. Taste is very balanced between thick sweet malts and very bitter citrus like flavors. Very dry and bitter finish. Med+ body. Like a great IPA.

Cannot say enough about this gem. My favorite Founders brew. Basically an ipa with rye, citrus and high hop character. It is the perfect combination of citrus and hops.
