Pours a deep red with a small head and decent lacing. Flavor is hoppy, yet subduded by rye and malt. A sweet finish of cherry and lemon. Palate is smooth and creamy, not as tart as the flavor and aroma predict. I like rye brews and will have to buy more of this. JCW (1262), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Ruby red color, moderate off white head. Aroma is very piny and moderately citrus. This is very much an IPA flavor and a good one at that, just like Hop Rye. Flavor is bitter and piney. Slight dry finisih. If you like an IPA, try this beer and you will not be disappointed. Like an amber ale, ryes can have a big variety in flavor and this one is very IPA’ish. nuplastikk (1261), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 11, 2009 12oz shorty bottle. Unfiltered orange-brown color. Sweet, thick bitter aroma. Malty and rich, with a serious earthy hop profile. Some amber malt notes collide with the hops, almost peppery. Bitter finish. Quite a well done beer, rich, but balanced. Great. Paired with the second course was this gem. I’ve been meaning to pick up some for a long time now. After trying it I definitely will revisit it once the cellar gets thinned down a bit. Much like the IPA and Pale Ale it is one of those gateway beers that you could share with someone not really into craft products.
Aroma / Appearance - The brownish red body percolated with carbonation on a short lived head. Black cherry, slightly burnt wood and watered down caramel created a nice malty presentation.
Flavor / Palate - Brown sugar and molasses hit the throat first. Next came bittersweet chocolate. The final ingredient was an earthy finish. A little more complex than the other two it was a nice transition to Founder’s bigger beers. In some ways it reminds me of Stone XIth or other ’dark IPAs’. I’ll definitely have to pick up more at some point. WISEGUY572 (1252), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Taste of sweet malts, sour mash, floral hops, American PAcific North West pine and citrus hops, caramel, and a nice hoppy bitter finish. Balanced and easy to drink. durhambeer (1245), Durham, USA

Crisp, hoppy sweet nose with solid rye malt aroma. Very fresh and fun, and more hoppy than many rye ales. Nice bubbly head atop a copper body. Grass, grains, and citrus. Crisp bitter finish. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 24, 2005 12oz. bottle thanks to Mullman. Auburn color with a medium sized tan head. Nice big hoppy aroma with lots of grapefruit and a mildly sweet malt background. Flavor was similar, but the citrus hop flavor pretty much overwhelmed the maltiness. Still very good.
