Shakesbeere (52), Massachusetts, USA Sep 25, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Golden pour with a thick, persistent head. Aroma is of malted rye and simcoe hops. The simcoe lends itself to a smell of fresh grapefruit. Flavor is a complement of sweet citrus and bitter hops with a tone of rye spice and underlying caramel malt. Palate changes midway from bitter to spicy, and dry. Finish is crisp and spicy with a touch of pine. Balance and complexity are very nice, and palate is just right -- not too thick or potent. A commendable brew, or "I’m the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life." tastybeer (33), Washington DC, USA Sep 24, 2009 Bottle. Pours a thick head with tons of hop flavor complimented with a sweet flavor. My first rye beer, very interesting collection of flavor with citrus, floral and spiciness. Would recommend. Brewbie (217), New York, USA Sep 21, 2009 12oz bottle. hazy gold/amber color, small thick head. big aroma of pine. taste is very hoppy, grapefruit and pine carrying thru from the aroma. rye and spice in the finish monkeychugg55 (214), Joliet, Illinois, USA Sep 20, 2009 Pours a dark reddish copper with a nice white head that leaves a ton of lacing. Sports an amazing aroma of simcoe, earthy grains, and some sweet caramel malt. Sweet caramel malt at first, with a crisp break, then a slew of hops and bitterness. Medium bodied with some light but prickly carbonation. This beer is awesome. An amazing amalgamation of flavors combined with great balancing and complexity. I really enjoy rye beers and this is a fine example of why. RHeastings (381), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 14, 2009 Enjoyed via draft in a nonic glass. The beer pours a copper hue with a creamy white head that is very nicely retained through the enjoyment of the product. Aromas of simcoe and cascade hops come through in the nose, forming a flavor profile that accents the qualities of both. The palate is firmly bitter up front, shows some spicy rye character in the mid-palate, and finishes with a pleasing resiny hop flavor. The beer is nicely full across the palate without giving the perception of being too-think or cloying. Overall, very well done. tarheels86 (705), Washington DC, USA Sep 14, 2009 355mL. Pours a slightly cloudy amber/orange with a four-finger, massive, yellowish tan head that has excellent retention and big poofs of lacing. Aroma is fresh grapefruit, fruity Centennial hops, some rye malt, bitter orange. Taste is refreshing: rye malt, some caramel, ends with some great alpha acid bitterness, some roasted hazelnut, and rye bread. Very light to medium bodied. Awesome session beer! danielcurtis81 (879), San Diego, California, USA Sep 13, 2009 BPW #52
Served on tap at Founders Brewing Company. Appearance is a rich caramelized red. The flavors and aromas have a solid rye malt tone with some earth hops and caramel notes. The mouth is nicely carbonated with s mild bitterness. A very delicious beer. shanepardue (107), Raytown, Missouri, USA Sep 11, 2009 Everything I like about an IPA with the hop aroma, but it adds a great caramel flavor you won’t find in an American IPA
