sethdude (600), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Nov 29, 2006 Mmmmmm...good. I would classify this as an ESB, personally. Pours redish copper, huge rootbeer-float head, tons of lacing. Aroma is awesome, hops, hops, and more hops. Begins spicy and hoppy, very warm. Notes of fruit (lemon) mingle with caramel and a nice bitter body. Aftertaste is very bitter as well. Awesome stuff. invalid (302), Columbus, Ohio, USA Nov 9, 2006 Nice citrus head, grapefruit with a kiss of bisquit/vienne malts. Pours a pretty amber color. Nice balance. Will drink again. sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Nov 1, 2006 12oz bottle. Hazy reddish hue. Bitter citrus nose. Hoppy aromas. Bitter rye malt, bitter citrus pine hops. Medium bodied. Bready and malty. Bitter rye flavors. Long lingering hop finish. Spicy, piney and citrus flavors. Very tasty. EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA Oct 30, 2006 Updated: Oct 25, 2007Bottle. Strange perfumed scent...perfume is key. Also has a generous dose of hop musk, florality, and fruitiness that leans toward raspberry. And a dash of grapefruit. Pours red with hefty carbonation and a rocky beige head. Very dry - rubber glove and cotton ball dry - with above-noted flavors and a bit of wood/pine to go along with the fruit. Very hoppy. Medium body is a bit too prickly for me. Finishes with a rush of dry spiciness and lasts, dryly, for what seems like minutes. This is very interesting but ... das ist nicht mein Bier! [3.0]
Update: Months later, same batch. I’m much more appreciative of the heavy dollop of piney hops this time around, and the very long, hoppy, brutally dry finish also fares better. Floral touch seems to have melded a bit better. [3.4] hindan02 (24), macomb, Michigan, USA Oct 30, 2006 a nice copper-ambercolor with a great head a great balance of hops and a bit of a flowery smell great crisp finish BeerandBlues2 (3201), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Oct 24, 2006 Pours amber with a patchy white head, fizzy, with spotty lacing. Aroma is malt (straw, meal), yeast (dough), rye, caramel and nuts, flowers and hoppy pine notes. Medium bitterness, sweaty yeast, malty dough, rye, earth, barn notes with a floral finish. Medium bodied and refreshing fizzy palate. moejuck (1165), Ohio, USA Oct 20, 2006 Another winner from Founders--probably my favorite brewery (despiter their cost). The red rye pours out a great dark red color with a brown head. The aroma is of hops and you can definitely tell it is rye from the earthy notes in the nose. Taste is full and nice--plenty of rye with a great hop profile. wheninhell (485), louisville, Kentucky, USA Oct 16, 2006 amber red with a tan head. Aroma very hoppy with toasted malt. fantastic flavor. balanced bitter hops spicy rye and sweet nutty malt. medium body. lively carbonation.spicy bittersweet finish. love the rye in this. great beer.
