jefcon (997), Arlington, Virginia, USA Jul 17, 2009 Reddish and amber in the glass with a disappearing head. Aromas of caramel, malt, rye whiskey, oak and a generous piney hop smell. Tons of hops pile on to the palate. Extremely bitter and dry, vegetal and pine hops. A sticky palate and finish. Muddled end where all the malts create a cloying caramel. Bitter to a fault. arminjewell (100), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 17, 2009 Yet another rye beer that has been outstanding. Poured brilliant red with white lacing head, smelled of thick hops upfront with a slight rye background. Nice and thick on the palate, with copious hops at the beginning followed by that crisp rye finish that balances extremely well. Reminds of Surly Furious in a way, excellent beer! tekhna (100), California, USA Jul 13, 2009 Updated: Aug 8, 2009Wow. Amazing red color and head. Amarillo hop nose, great bitterness, malt balance, touch of sweetness. Excellent beer.
Honestly I’m not sure how the rye plays into all of this, but if it has any role whatsoever, bully for them. Uglyradio (773), Greenville, South Carolina, USA Jul 12, 2009 Clear amber color...Lasting white head...Pine and citrus hop aroma...Medium body, low carbonation lends an almost creamy mouthfeel...Malt flavor of caramel upfront...Hops kick in in the finish...Long citrus and bitter finish... halfonit (419), Fall River, Massachusetts, USA Jul 11, 2009 Nice brown color. Smell mostly of hops. Nice dry hopped flavor. Has one heck of a bite in the end. Pipper (225), Ohio, USA Jul 9, 2009 On tap at The Beer Engine this week. Poured a medium ruddy amber into pint with no head but off white ring. No carbonation. Resinous flower bomb hop aroma and flavor is to match, almost like chewing on gerianium leaves. Smooth mouthfeel and very refreshing not at all what I was expecting. Love this stuff. Block (363), West Lafayette, Indiana, USA Jul 2, 2009 Red pour with a white head. Aroma is dominated by hops and some darker caramel malts. Flavor is really well balanced between the malt and hops. Lots of hops flavor with a moderately bitter finish. guzzler67 (1272), Hanover, Maryland, USA Jul 2, 2009 Hazed, reddish amber appearance with a large beige head and very good lacing. Early on, the aroma is grainy, moderately sweet malts, but wait a whiff and you run into flowery and resinous hops. Flavors also bounce back and forth, with the earthy rye in sync with the spicy, citrusy hops. Spicy hops dominate the lingering finish as well. Just wish I had easy access to this brewer in general and this beer specifically.
