Pours brown with a hint of red with an off-white head. Aroma is of maple syrup, bourbon, malt and alcohol. Taste is very sweet with syrup and molasses with a malty aftertaste. Really nice stuff. I wish it was easier to get.

Growler shared by shigadeyo (notes 2/26/10). Pours a deep copper with reddish hints. No head to speak of except the few random bubbles. The aroma is malty caramel laced with a hefty dose of maple syrup. I get the sensation that there is some alcohol also, either because there is or because the intense sweetness presents like a digestif. The flavor has ample amounts of sweet caramel laced with more sweet maple syrup. Additional notes of vanilla, bourbon and hints of wood. This is a sipper. Medium full body, smooth and a treat to be able to taste. Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to try this again someday.

Growler; thanks Brandon!! Pours clear dark ruby brown with foamy light tan head to the edges; sweet, boozy nose with salt water toffee, syrup and light bourbon; creamy, raw and very boozy overall; vanilla cookies, with raw brown sugar and bourbon; smells so good but drinks with a raw sharpness that is very sweet; syrupy flavors and texture too; lots of barrel and heavily trumped base beer

2/26/2010: Founders Sappy Slappy... Aroma: Boozy maple syrup. Appearance: Very pretty deep orange-copper color with highlights of red; transparent; minimal carbonation; loose golden bubbles on the surface. Flavor: Sweet, maple and caramel/toffee; substaintially malty without being overly thick or heavy; really nice finish with some vanilla and a nice amount of soft barrel char; tasty brandy boozy-like maple syrup and a touch of bourbon becomes apparent as the beer warms; some tobacco as well. Palate: Medium to medium-full body; extremely smooth and mellow; silky mouthfeel. Overall: Excellent beer; again, tons better than the regular Dirty Bastard and even slightly better than the Backwoods Bastard (he maple sweetness takes off the sometimes harsh, overly bourbony and oaky edge).

Draught (growler fill) from Party Town in Florence, Kentucky. Rating #36 for this beer.

Draft @ EBF. Amber pour with some light tan head. Caramel, maple and toffee notes along with some woody scotch and peat like notes. Bourbon flavors also enter.

Growler… This beer rocks!… Clear ruby ale with a small, creamy, khaki head. The aroma offers malty, boozy, earthen notes of maple syrup, rye whiskey, caramel and raw oak. Medium to full-bodied with tingly carbonation. The flavor is all about caramel, maple syrup and rye whiskey. Finishes much the same - goes out with a raw oak and rye whiskey bang. World class growler of beer shared by Maltzilla!

growler @ Miami Fandango ’10 gathering. Cheers to Diego for bringing all these crazy growlers. dark brown in color, no head. aroma and flavors, caramel malts, grainy palate with light touch of vanilla, dark fruits and a warming boozy finish. There is a sense of lingering syrupy/sticky mouthfeel, possibly some maple. Barrel is very subdued yet adds to the whole experience.

Experienced on tap in a small pilsner glass. The beer pours a deep and slightly dark amber color, with a white head. The nose is extremely sweet, and resembles maple syrup in a slightly diluted liquid form. Caramel, brown sugar, and the aforementioned syrup. The palate is fairly interesting initially, but soon begins to border on being cloying to the point of undrinkability. Regular Dirty Bastard is quite sweet, and it seems that the brewers, in additioning to aging the beer, back sweetened it with some sort of sugar prior to bottling. Overall, an interesting idea, but unbalanced and fairly unenjoyable.

Sampled on draft at Smokin’ Joe’s in Pittsburgh PA this beer poured a hazy orange-tan color with a small beige head that produced good lacing. The aroma was toasted caramel, strong bourbon, nut and light fruity hops. The flavor was in your face with bourbon (tasted just like Old Granddad to me) with undertones of molasses, tasted caramel, vanilla and light sour and fruity hops. The finish was long with bourbon and caramel. Thick and full body. If you took Old Granddad and turned it into beer this is what it would taste like. Remarkable.

Dark brown body, more or less clear. No head. This shit was off the hook. Without trying the backwoods bastard next to this, I cant really tell the difference. However, it is just really smooth, really potent, and the bourbon shows up big time. Better than this years bottled Backwoods Bastard, about the same with last years. Is this bourbon flavored beer, or beer flavored bourbon? Awesome stuff.

On tap at Smokin’ Joes. Dark mahogany, thin wisps of white for a head. Nose is heavy caramel malt, wood, bourbon, and maple, plus a large dose of sugars. More alcohol in the flavor, maple still dominating. Very sweet and boozy, not nearly the balance achieved in the CBS and the malt is nearly lost in the barrel-maple concoction. Not offensive, but typical of Founders overdoing something.
