COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer style first appeared in the late 1600s in the British Isles. Founders’ stout is brewed according to a more modern method, following the craft brewing innovations of today. We use Pilsner, black and crystal malts for body and color; Northern Brewer hops for bittering; Styrian Golding and Fuggles hops for flavoring.

Very dark colour. Opaque. Highly coffee accented in both aroma and flavour. Chocolate, licorice and burnt malt put in an appearance too. Although there’s a sweetish edge in the flavour, it finished quite dry. Maybe a touch thin but, otherwise, pretty good, I thought. On tap at the Founders, Alexandria.

Vanilla, tobacco, roasted coffee, ashes in the aroma. Solid flavor, roast, chocolate, coffee (all very standard but reasonably well done). 96% opaque, nice brown color, average palate--smooth and drinkable, middle of the pack for quality. (on tap at brewpub)

The brew board said oatmeal stout. So be it. Pitch black with a lasting tan creamy wispy head. Nose was full of rich roasted bittersweet chocolate, warmed oatmeal, coffee, and toast, with light berry tones that played out late. Flavor was similar, rich, toasty, oats and chocolate malt, but followed up nicely with a good back end hop bite. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. bittersweet finish. Real nice session brew. Glad I found myself down there one more time before all of Bill M’s beers are out. This stout was definitely a nice surprise...

A very dry stout. Light, nutty aroma. Black. Standard dry stout; a Guinness clone with less body. Light red wine flavor from a longer tip of the glass that is not found in a small sip.

a decent stout. A rich black with very little head. Aroma was coffee and lightly toasted hops. A good blend of flavors. Nice middle of the road beer that was neither light nor reaked of alcohol. Probably a good session stout/

A pleasant basic stout with some coffee overtones. Not an especially strong taste, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Had this on draft at Founders’ on 11/21/04. Black body. Nose is roasted malt, light molasses and coffee. Taste is more roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate and light alcohol. Body is a bit oily, bittersweet but creamy. Finish is more coffee, hints of dark chocolate, and roasted malt. Not too bad.

Midnight black ale. The nose is of weak coffee and chocolate. The flavor is a little watery with mild notes of coffee and chocolate. Light to medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Moderately bitter, dry finish.

Dark black with a thin, oily head. Nose quite slight, bit roasty, possibly a bit of chocolate. Nice flavor, excellent roasts, light chocolate, a bit of woodiness. Good palate, nicely creamy. A darn good stout.
