4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap, it arrived at our table glowing a clear golden-copper amber and held a finger-thick off-white head that filled what little space was available above the beer (my only complaint, really, but technically I got more beer). The head was fueled by multiple steady streams of carbonation that lasted throughout the drink and provided ample support to the amazing sheets of sticky lacing that graced the glass while I sipped on it. Awesome head retention and lacing? A great way to start a beer off, in my opinion. ---
I held my nose over the brew and caught huge whiffs of orange peel and grapefruit zest, pine needle hops, and some faint grassy-malt sweetness underneath. The lively bitterness almost made it seem fizzy in my nose, but it was a welcome vivacity from an IPA and was very reminiscent of summer. ---
Eager to bathe my taste buds in the hoppy glory that was emanating from the Hop Knot, I first had to get over how super quaffable the brew was. This is some seriously smooth beer. It flooded my mouth with just enough piney, resiny hops, orange peel and grapefruit zest without overwhelming my senses. It was freshly bitter and bright without too much bite thanks to the lightly caramel sweet malts that made a quick appearance before the grand finale. Throughout the drink, the bitterness briskly jigged with the finely-bubbled peppy carbonation, creating a lighter mouthfeel (among a medium body) and leaving my tongue feeling awake and refreshed. And despite all of the happy hops jumping around between my cheeks, the ending was nice and smooth with a clean aftertaste.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz bottle received as an extra. Pours a very slight hazy pale golden yellow color with two finger frothy white head that quickly settles into a thin ring. Minimal spots of lacing.
Very bland aroma that isn’t very hoppy. Slightly floral with pale malt and light citrus fruit notes in the nose.
Medium bodied with some earthy bitter hops up front that are quickly countered by a pilsner malt like backbone. Slightly earthy/piny before with hints of subtle citrus. Crisp and easy to drink with a slightly dry finish but nor very exciting.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAR 1, 2011 On tap at Four Peaks and at the Sheraton Phoenix Airport. Crystal clear light copper color witha quickly disappearing white head. Strong fresh hop aroma rising off this. Astringent, slighty resiny pine and grapefruit and light citrus flavors from the hops with a good balance from the caramel malt flavor, but it’s really just there as a base for the hops. Definitely a hop lovers beer, the bitterness bites in and sticks around long after you’ve swallowed it. From reading a few of the other reviews, I have a feeling this beer is best fresh from the tap rather than from a bottle that’s had to travel. All these delicious hop flavors probably don’t fare as well when they aren’t as fresh which is a shame for those who aren’t in Phoenix to get it that way. Tasty, well-made IPA.

Second tasting was at the Main Ingredient, and was slightly more tasty than I remember it, with a nicer aroma.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Another great beer from Four Peaks Brewery in Tempe, Arizona. This beer falls between a pale ale and an IPA. Smell was closer to an IPA (lots of hops) the flavor seemed to be more subtle. Not as hoppy as most IPAs, good flavor and after taste. Reminded me of a strong american pale ale. This was an incredibly easy beer to drink, very flavorful and smooth.
This beer started as a seasonal but was recently made a year round brew now available in kegs and bottles.

Bottle: The aroma consists of citrus, mango, grapefruit, and just a hint of caramel. It pours a transparent golden-orange with a small soapy white head. The flavor starts with sweet citrus, mango, and a touch of caramel. The finish has moderate grapefruit and pine. Medium bodies with mild carbonation.
