This is an ale made in the tradition of the great strong ales of Scotland. Amber colored, malty sweet with underlying note of smokiness.

If you've never had it on tap then you need to ASAP. It is not even close to the same beer in a bottle. The stuff in the bottle is boring like Al Gore, but on tap it's spicy like Charro. Bottled it seems like a basic amber with too much fizz. Since draught is often less carbonated that might be the major difference. My go-to beer when on tap, but NEVER from a bottle. Goes well with mexican food.

I didn't take any extra notes when I tried this beer for the first time but I'm gonna try it again and update my comments. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On draught at Red Devil (Lakeside), December 2013.
Clear dark amber with strong auburn tints and a beige head that shows moderate retention.
Sweet and fruity notes of candied plum, raspberry, dry toffee and raisins abound in the nose. No alcohol or flaw, with ample grassy hop notes helping dry out and balance the maltiness.
Fruity and with light sourdough-like malt flavors, moderately sweet toffee and raisins all adding quite a bit of complexity and flavor for only 6%. Don’t get a ton of smokiness, though there is some dry phenolic character. The fruitiness is quite dry and quite fragrant in the nose and flavorful in the mouth. Probably my favorite part. Not too tangy or toasted, as often many beers of this style can be.

Bottle at a friends house during a bottle share. Nothing extraordinary. Malty on the nose and in the flavor. better than most that I had toward the end of the night.

Sweet and caramellized malt aroma. Same could be said about the taste although it is backed up by a slight metallic note. Quite refreshing though. No trace of the promised smoke.

Pours a deep copper color with an alcohol soaked malt aroma. Taste is mildly sweet, minor caramel taste. I didn’t taste the smokiness, but the beers sweetness made up for it.

Pint at the Phoenix airport. Not being a fan of Irish reds, I like this because it has a non traditional malt base. More like toffee. Very gentle fruit. It is fairly rich in the feel. A bit of an odd sweetness that combines spiciness.

On tap at Watermans Beer Market 160515. Not bad but a little bit thin for me. Toffee and vanilla flavours with a smooth mouthfeel.

12oz bottle/draft. Had this many times while I was in Arizona. Was told it was one of the staples of the craft movement down there. Amber color. Sweet malty taste, caramel. Decent.

Again do not see the scores reflecting that this brew is a great Scottish ale. Amber to garnet, big head and carbonation brought out wonderful malts and dark fruits. Taste is just like smell with added peat to it and some anise. Excellent.
