Scott Spicola was a former owner and brewer at Ali’i Brewery in Honolulu, Hawaii. In his time there he created many fantastic beers that cultivated quite the following both at his Brewery and at restaurants around Hawaii. He was also a good friend of our Head Chef, Arthur Craft; growing up together, going to concerts, hanging out and generally just being the kids that they were. Scott passed away a little over 4 years ago at the age of 35, as a result Arthur and Scott’s family wanted to do something special in his memory. The Macadamia Nut Brown Ale (available this Friday the 2nd), which was his signature beer at Ali’i, was decided upon to be a fitting tribute, the easiest way to share one of his passions with the rest of us.

Clear amber brown pour with a big lacy head. Aroma is nice, sweet malt and toasted Macadamia nuts. Flavor is sweet, but not aggressively so, but as it warms it becomes dominated by artificial Macadamia nut flavor. Not so good.

on tap 4/5/10 in tempe. dark auburn/chestnut brown with a raw almond tinted off white head. it smells like macadamia butter cookies.... with notes of caramel, a lactic tang, toasty nuts, bubblegum, florals, butter and cola. odd flavor... overpowering mac nuts, cola, weird herbaceous-ness, bubblegum, butter and a goat cheese-like tartness. it is not sweet but it is cloying as the nuttiness grows artificial and overwhelming. burps up fruit punch and fake... crisp medium body... it would be easy to put away if it weren’t so awkward. this is the first fail from 4P...7/3/3/2/10/2.5

On tap at the Tempe location on April 2. Pours clear dark amber with a thin tan head. The nose is chocolate covered cherries, roasted nuts, caramelized brown sugar. The taste is pretty much the same. Medium slick mouthfeel. Way too sweet and not something I’d want to try again.

I knew I was in trouble when the waitress put this on my table and said, "This stuff is nasty, good luck." Later, the guy who took my glass asked if I liked this one. I told him I didn’t. He said, "Yeah, that stuff is gross." I don’t really have anything to add.

BOLTZ7555 (3014) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - APR 4, 2010
On tap @ Scottsdale location. Crystal clear mahogany pour with hues of chestnut, acorn, cashew, and crimson accompanied by a HUGE eggshell head that had to subside before the sip. Extremely aromatic with a lot of vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, and honey. The macadamia nut is extremely evident, both in aroma and flavor. Quite oily and almost "fatty"...somewhat slippery on the palate. Overly sweet and almost cloying...needs some balance.
