COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sirius Black is a much stronger, bolder stout which was originally brewed for the Czar, Peter the Great. More specifically for his wife Catherine, who fell in love with the style on a state visit to England. It had to be brewed strong to last the sea and overland travel to St. Petersburg plus it was to be aged like a wine. We’ve taken some liberties with the traditional recipe and added three pounds of licorice root as well as five pounds of Indian Monsooned Malabar coffee, which was home-roasted by Melissa. The intention was not to make a “licorice and coffee” beer but merely to add even more complexity to an already very complex beer. Sirius Black has an intense roasted malt/coffee aroma with flavors of burnt toffee and caramel as well as a slight alcoholic “heat” (9.5% alcohol). It has an almost opaque color from the kilned malts used topped by a dark tan head. The body of the beer is also remarkable in its almost oily consistency giving it a creamy mouthfeel. This recipe was a collaborative effort from all of the brewers at Four Peaks.

Pours jet black from the tap at the brewery with a creamy brown head. Looks gorgeous, but the flavors of Hersheys cocoa, licorice, and coffee seem unbalanced to me. Some time in a bourbon barrel is definitely in order.

Black pour. Small head. Aroma is a bourbon bomb! And thats ok with me! Lots of really good vanilla, oak, drunken raisins, licorice and some molasses too. Flavor is sweet and loaded with bourbon, oak, molasses, licorice, roasted malt, chocolate and hints of coffee on the back. Nice brew.

On tap @ AZ Strong Beer Festival. Pretty decent porter, very average stout, below the line Impy. Dark mahogany pour a bit short of black with a thin latte head. Aroma is Folger’s crystals and Good & Plenty candy. Flavor is also has a little chocolate and alcohol...unfortunately, it seems like the right "types" of flavors are there but with average/cheap ingredients. A little chalky.

On tap at the AZ Strong Beer fest. Pours pitch black with a small tan head. The nose is roasted malt and floral hops. The taste is molasses, milk chocolate, roasted malt and light coffee. Medium bodied. Decent stout.

On tap at the brewery. Deep black pour with a creamy, lasting tan head that leaves wet lace. Aroma of roasted coffee, licorice and piney hops. Lots of elements in the flavor, most notable is the licorice. Also caramel, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee and a hint of hops on the finish. Smooth and creamy on the palate. This is very tasty stuff!

So Sirius Black makes me think of Harry Potter - I guess I’m a dork. The beer wasn’t as imposing as most Imperial Stouts can be. I actually thought it might have been a Barelywine to tell how sweet this one was.

tempe location...

pours into one expensive ass snifter opaque black with a creamy tan cap. enormous amounts of spotty and webby lacing are left behind. initial aroma is of green leafy hops... interesting and mmm! later i pick up pine, earth, dirty licorice root, faint coffee and lots of green herbal notes. the flavor is VERY malty and roasted yet NOT sweet! woohoo! atypical... rich robust flavors of grain/malt/roast, cream, faint coffee, brown sugar, just a touch of chocolate, licorice root along with it*s dry bitterness and some piney hops. coffee lingers in the aftertaste as i burp up rosemary. not terribly complex but it*s bitter and dry... gotta love it!

it only improves as it warms. by then the abv% is felt in the gut as it starts to warm me up on this chilly december afternoon. super tight bubbles make it creamy and luscious but the dryness keeps it very drinkable and enjoyable.

i*d love to see this on cask! 8/4.5/8.5/4.5/17/4.2

Tap @ Tempe location. Sweet oatmeal and licorice aromas. Black body with tan head with lacing left on snifter. Flavors of sweet licorice, coffee and the sweet bitters linger on the palate abit. Has a warming effect on body good winter brew.
