COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Much controversy surrounds this pretty simple style. I don’t know why. It’s an IPA....and it’s black. Basically, it’s a lot like a robust porter without the burnt astringency of the highly kilned malts, and with a lot more hops.

Growler from the Wilson street. location, and called Pitchfork and not Winter Wobbler, pours with a very dark body that supports a nice and nearly creamy dark tan head of foam. The modest aroma offers up earthy malts, dark roasted maltiness, some chocolate malts and then a faint root beer note. The taste begins with dark roasted malts that are thinly ringed with burnt malts as well as a modest yet vague hop bitterness. It gets to some chocolate and malt sweetened earthy malts midway and into the finish where the dark roasted malts linger for a while. Nice easy going Black IPA.

Draft @ Four Peaks. Clear dark brown almost black with a spotty khaki head. Aroma of coffee, pine, chocolate and citrus. Flavor of dry cocoa, medium hop bitterness and acidic coffee. Medium body with a long, bitter finish. Good aroma but the taste is a bit harsh and acidic.

At Four Peaks 8th street. Pours near black with a creamy espresso head. Aroma has some nice bright citrusy hops. Taste is semi sweet with bitterness on the end. Thinner bodied and dry. Pretty good for the style.

Very dark brown pour at the brewery. Thin tan head. Aroma is a mix of cocoa, roasted malt and hops. The hops are nice and bitter, but not overly so. The hops and roasted malt meld well in this one. But as their winter beer, I don’t think I would have chosen a black IPA.

On tap at the Scottsdale brew pub. Comes a very dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of pine and roasted malt. Taste is roasted malt, pine, and grass. Interesting.

On draft at Four Peaks Tasting Room. Pours a cloudy dark brown with a two-finger beige head and even lacing. Wet pine, earthy hops, and some alfalfa on the nose with a hint of anise. Sadly, the good aroma doesn’t come through at all on the taste, which is dry and woody without much of a bitter hop bite. Thin body for a black IPA.

In a snifter, black pour with a tan head. Aroma is roasty malts with a little hop character. Taste has hop bitterness and some toasted malts and a little chocolate flavor. A nice brew.
