A robust amber ale with a distinct caramel flavor imparted by crystal malt and balanced by the hop varieties challenger and fuggles.

Draft pint at the brewpub. Very active with a tight head of foam. Caramel nose but a very nice well balanced beer, fitting into what I’d consider the altbier tradition. (#3663, 9/13/2009)

Draft as Castle Red at the Bull and Castle in Dublin. An amber beer with a huge beige head. The aroma has notes of caramel and sweet malt as well as a light touch of butter. The flavor is sweet with notes of chewy malt, caramel, and bisquits.

Cask gravity at GBBF ’09. Amber. Chocolate earth aroma. Watery taste of stable straw. Not good. I loved the name of the beer, but... sorry.

Cask@GBBF. Dark amber color, small off-white head. Light nose: some berries, some caramel. Caramel, some herbs, nuts. Light cellary note. Interesting.

[2187-20090520] Tap. Weird vegetal sweet grains aroma has a random poo peat note. Clear, dark red amber body with a small long-lasting creamy off-white head. Toasted grain flavour has lots of wet paper notes and a very mild hint of chocolate. Medium body. Discontinuous aroma and flavour, odd.

2009-05-20. Dark copper-amber body with a good sized creamy beige head. (3+) Sweetish aroma of malt, touch of musty dish rag is off putting but brief. Flavour is on the sweet side, malt, just a touch of caramel malt, a yeasty undertone throughout leaves the impression of the beer being a bit green, light. Average palate. Not as good as the beers sampled at the brewpub so perhaps the keg/lines here were off, or perhaps that is really what the beer is like. On tap at Bru Bar, Cork

Very clear Red Ale, Hop and Malt flirts with you but never goes any further. Medium Carbonation, Not much bar a subtle fruity underbelly.

UPDATED: JAN 4, 2009 Draught, Bull and Castle, Dublin. Bright ruby with a persistent collar and lace. Woodsy cask-like hints on the snout, joined by grapefruit and blackcurrant. Notes mention Titanic, Galena, Cascade... Blackcurranty hop tang, soft nutty malts, caramel, insinuating citrus. Surprisingly tangy, well-hopped red ale.
