3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MrBunn (2053) - Western, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 31, 2012
On tap at sports bar in the Gaylord Texan. It’s called Franconia Big Red here, but an email to Franconia confirmed this is an alias. The beer arrives in a frosted mug with so much ice on the sides that I have to wait to find out that this beer has a nice reddish hue. I can tell right away that the head is a little undersized, but it’s ok. Aromas are sugary, nutty and slightly earthy and (oddly enough) become more pronounced as the beer warms. Flavor is nice, but it’s more like a red ale than what I would consider an amber... Still, it has a nice toffee sweetness that balances against a little hop bitterness and the earthy/nutty notes I picked up on in the nose. Decently drinkable.

On tap at my place. Pours a hazy dark amber with rich tan head. Aroma is very malty with notes if caramel, faint hints of maple with a faint hop presence. Flavor is malty sweet, caramel, hints at maple, some nut, and a nice spiciness in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium body with medium-high, soft carbonation, creamy. Overall, very tasty brew!

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Dixonian (1200) - Dallas, Texas, USA - SEP 28, 2011
On tap @ the mexican restaurant in Gaylord Texan.
I didn’t believe the waiter when he told me they had this on tap as I’ve never seen it before so I went to the bar and sure enough the tap clearly said Franconia Amber. Deep red brew with a small amount of off-white head. Aromas of caramel malt, grassy hops, and some grains - flavor is smooth and quite drinkable with some toffee and more caramel malt. A bit thin - who knows how long this keg has been sitting at this place. This beer may be retired at this point.
