Bottle in Detroit. Clear, copper appearance with an ivory head. Toasty, burnt bacon, mild smoky, toffee, caramel aroma. Kind of weird aroma. Summer sausage, mildly smoky, caramel flavor. Drinkable but weird.

Sampled at an esbls tasting. This pours a dark brown and is opaque. A nice tan head does not last long. A malt based nose also has hops and yeast. This is sour and not a great offering.

Bottle: This is the first craft "twist off" I’ve had in quite awhile. The aroma is toasty along with some chocolate and nuts. It pours a transparent copper when held to the light with a two finger khaki head that fades fairly quickly to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. The flavor starts with a quick dose of light chocolate and caramel. The finish has light toastiness and a touch of nuts. Light bodied with light-moderate carbonation. Overall, a solid Dunkel, but not as good as the times I’ve had it on tap.

Bottle. Brown sugar and chocolate malt aroma. Dark orange-brown color with large head. Tangy brown sugar malt and lightly bitter herbal hops flavor. Good - different from the average dunkel.

On tap at the brewery, Frankenmuth. Deep red-orange body, thin off-white head. Light toasty nose. Dry body, toasty and acidic, with dark chocolate, toast, and leafy hops. Thin-bodied and simple.

Bottle - Pours a cloudy dark brown. Small off white head. Some bottom sediment. Mild nutty aroma. Malty, but not sweet for me. Got some bitterness in the taste and some more in the lingering mouthfeel. OK beer but nothing stands out for me.

Sweet malt flavor and aroma. No hops. Medium head and body. Alcohol was not evident.

12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy copper color with a small off-white head. Toasty and toffee aroma with some spice, with a strong mineral aroma coming on as well. Flavor is quite earthy, with iron, spiciness, toastiness, and toffee. Fairly nice.

Pour from a 12oz bottle. Has the color of a cola, except is cloudy. Big head that settles down to a persistent layer of foam. Interesting aroma dominated by roasted malts, some grassy hoppiness and perhaps yeast evident. Taste is quite good - raosted malts and sweet malts at the start offset by a restrained but evident grassy hoppiness that asserts itself in the finish. Not bland or lagerish, though rather light in palate. Some tastes in the swallow remind me of dunkel weisse, but but much less pronounced. Interesting and tasty.

I had a chance to sit down with a full pint of Munich Dunkel, the lager style that "made Munich famous."
Dark in color, it looks like any other porter or stout but with a cleaner aroma and mouth feel and a little less body that one would expect to find in a typical ale. It has a nice soft chocolate nose and drinks rather easy. There’s a light Hallertau hop presence to clean up the maltiness. Stylistically, its actually a little thicker than a typical dunkel would be, but this may be due to a bump in the chocolate malt to compensate for North American six row grains.
For me, this is actually a very nice session beer and my bias would rate this a little higher personally than I would for a review, because this is one of my favorite styles. That said, while very good, it’s not a perfect effort and probably not as good as the original Atwater Dunkel, back when they were importing grains in 1997-98 under their original brewmaster.
