3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 BBB63 (5039) - La Porte, USA - AUG 19, 2007
Post MiBGF party, growler provided by Ryan, THANKS! Murky brown hue with a fading small beige head and minimal lace. The aroma has notes of chocolate, oat, biscuit, smoke, dusty yeast, aromatic light tobacco and a hint of coffee. The taste starts with heavy roasted malt overtones, bready and nutty with a lush chocolate background. I found a hint of prune and coffee in midsection and the brew finished slight oxidized and dry. The mouth feel is lively and sharp at first before the dusty finish. A workable brew that seemed a tad old for some reason.

On tap at Franklins, Hyattsville on 14 July 2006 (at 8.0%). Black in colour. Quite roasty. Strong, sharp bitterness, tending towards astringent. Thinnish mouthfeel. Unusual but not unpalatable.

Black/dark brown body with a small tan head. The nose is roast, dark chocolate, oats and molasses. The flavor is very roasty and lightly sweet with coffee, milk chocolate and oats. Medium body is round with light carbonation and a bitter finish.

Draft, Franklin’s. Pours a murky brown color; medium brown head that quickly fades to nothing. Pleasant cocoa and dark chocolate in the aroma; minimal hop presence (if any); a hint of fennel / licorice. Fizzy carbonation. Medium mouthfeel: cocoa and bitter chocolate; slightly acidic citrus presence, but not really from any refined hop character; drinkable, with plenty of chocolate. Medium, cocoa and bitter chocolate finish.

A very black beer with no head. The aroma is quite light, but what is there is sweet roasted combined with notes of oatmeal. The flavor is sweet and very malty and with notes of oatmeal. I find it a bit boring, but definately the most malty beer from Franklin’s that I’ve sampled.

Draught @ Brewpub
Black, light head and lacing. Nose of roast, astringency and some black burnt coffee. Light vanilla and soy, overpowering and nausiating chemical bond taste. The finish is chalky and astringent. Dry, blech.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a dark, dark brown without very much head at all. Has a malty smoked taste. Big coffee aroma. After drinking Chaos, this seems a bit thin in body. Roasted coffee flavors as well. Medium carbonation. It is missing any oatmeal thickness. The finish is rather tart. OK, but not great.

Poured with almost no head from the growler. Very dark color with a distict coffee scent. Full bodied and dry. Best served cool to room temp. Not a bad attempt at a stout from a small local microbrew-pub.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 lamas (1071) - Washington DC, USA - MAY 27, 2005
On tap. Deep, dark and dull mahogany pour with no head. Aroma is strongly of roasty coffee and malts with hints of chocolate. Thin mouthfeel. Dark roasty malts and coffee/bitter chocolate dominate the flavor. A dry, black coffee bitter finish with some sourness. Seems more like a porter to me. Definitely lacks the smoothness and body of other oatmeal stouts I’ve had. Slightly above average carbonation and at 6% ABV a surprising warming presence of alcohol. If this is a leftover from the winter, it has aged harshly.
