On tap at Franklins. Filtered orange-brown. Big smoky aroma and flavor. Luscious and smooth. Quite well done, very drinkable. Very balanced, a solid example.

Growler picked up from the General Store. Poured a clear copper color, tiny slightly off-white head. Aroma was sweet caramels, some smoke characters. When the beer warmed, the aromas were more pronounced, and it was a better beer (poured it straight out of the fridge was a mistake). Flavor was sweet notes, with caramels, touch of dried fruits, some smoke. Again, better as it warmed. I’m not a huge fan of smoked beers, but this one did the trick.

Growler (tried on Tgiving), thanks peregrinari. Clear copper body, small off-white head. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel, light smoke, spicy/rye, raisin. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, some raisin, light rye, spicy, faint smoke. Sticky medium body.

On tap at Franklin’s.
Pours a moderate caramel color with decent head and lacing. Nose has a good hefty amount of smoke with a bit of bready malt. Flavor is more smoke with less malt. Quite a bit too unbalanced. Medium body and a smokey, dry finish. Decent enough, but not something I’d go back to.

On tap at the brewpub: Pours a clear deep copper bronze with a stringy-lacing off-white head. Has a lightly sweet and smoky toffee nose with a touch of light fruits. Starts with decent fullness and mild caramel sweetness with a touch of bready rye and authentic smoke complexity before a hint of tartness shows up near the finish. Pretty true to style, but could use a little more body and less tartness.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 lamas (1071) - Washington DC, USA - NOV 27, 2011
Draft on 11/25/11. Came to the table a clear copper/amber color with a smallish beige head. Toasted rye, caramel, some smokiness, and a little woodsiness in the subtle aroma. Went down thin to medium-bodied. The flavor started with some sweet caramel maltiness and some toasted rye. Smoke and woodsy qualities became apparent towards the end. The smoke was nicely understated and never got in the way of the other flavors. There was only a hint of warming alcohol present. Very enjoyable and quite drinkable.

Draft. Clear amber color, small off white head, solid lacing. Aroma of toast and subtle chocolate. Taste is burnt caramel, light ash. One of my favorite beers of the night.
