COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep and dark colored, cloudy with yeast. Brewed with a darker roasted malt which adds some maltiness to the refreshing flavour of the Hefe-Weissbier.

Now, this is beer! Germans should be proud for their skill in brewing one of the best beers in the whole world! Franziskaner is made out of wheat and thus is the cloudy consistency and unique flavor of this original beer. The Dunkel or Dark version is particular good. Much foamy and much clouder than the regular Franziskaner Weissbier.

I thought this would be to the hefe what a dopplebock is to a bock. Oopsie. That's what I get for only having German language skills enough to say "I too am a jelly donut." (bonus points if you get the reference < grin >) This is like the regular hefe without the fruit, but maltier and with a bit of spice. Nice head and scent. Tastes...good, with hints of fruit but more spice and malt flavor. Mouthfeel is good and foamy...

UPDATED: OCT 6, 2005 Medium head over cloudy brown drink. Thin, notes of cider. Good for price. *10/5/05 Rerate* same pint .9 bottle as last time. This beer is good, good in that it has potential to be way better. It is much better on tap, for instance, than in this tacky bottle. I’m new to dunkelweizens, but this lacks a little flava and lot of alcohol for its dank yeastyness. Banana and very lite citrus. I enjoyed this over all other weizen, just needs more malt and more alcohol.

Brown body, good off-white head. Malt, wheat and banana in the aroma. Tasted drier than I was expecting, and the finish was also rather weak IMO. Michael Jackson writes of "toffee, pepper and spices" in his review, but frankly I didn't detect those flavours in my bottle. With the "darker" flavours not fully developed, this one tastes much like its pale counterpart, the Franziskaner Weissbier - which may not be bad news, after all.

Bottle. Big wheat head, bubbling away, popping and gradually sinking. Dirty brown to mahogony colour depending on the light source. A thin murky colour whatever the light. Wheat nose - slight spice, clean, acceptable, not exciting. Thin, vanishing mouthfeel, initially wet, but slightly drier in the finish. Metallic all round. Slight wheat flavours coming through with the most vague, wimpy, lazy, couldn't be bothered dark malt flavours lurking around in the background - sometimes coming forward only to vanish away quickly. This is damn poor stuff. That it is wet is the best that can be said for it. Dreadful. Dreadful.

Spice dominates the malty aroma. Beautiful big pillowy head that dissipates steadily to reveal a dark copper coloured body leaving a nice lacing. Flavour is mild banana and some clove spiciness with a nice wheat base. Mouthfeel is medium-full. Perhaps not the best example of the style but a nice beer nonetheless. Bottle.

Out of the bottle, this brew looks nice. However, the flavor is a bit more watered-down than I expected. Aroma is sharp and spicy. Finish was better than expected.

Huge tan head that dissapears withing a minute or two. Sweet (banana?) flavours with hints of yeast. A bit dissapointing taste, very flat and not as interesting as the smell.

Huge head. Maltish, dark chalk flavors, twigs. Some nice sweet citrus flavors with some bitterness in the end. Fairly sweet, short, and dry.

Cloudy brown color with a thick fluffy head. Malt and wheat on the nose. Crisp and refreshing. Nice lace.
