Deep and dark colored, cloudy with yeast. Brewed with a darker roasted malt which adds some maltiness to the refreshing flavour of the Hefe-Weissbier.

May 29th, 2011 - That cheeky monk goes wherever good beer goes. He’s kind, affable, and accessible, even for the poorest beer drinker like me. There’s no reason not to pick up a whole line of the Franziskaner beers, then, and give yourself a week to take in a little German culture and art. I started my horizontal tasting with the Hefe-weissbier Dunkel, appealingly dark, but certain to have a refined elegance reserved for lighter beers. and lagers. It pours with a somewhat thick light brown head, and the body glows with a deep and dark-orange red color, like a dying ember. I can’t catch much aroma through the foam, so I dig a shaft through the bubbles and take a sip. It begins with a light core of chocolate, accented with clove and brown sugar, resembling a pumpkin beer without the vegetal notes. The body is medium, the flavor is good, clear and clean, and sports a lot of straightforward, no-nonsense palate pleasing that would go tremendously well with chicken or pork dishes. Why don’t I buy these beers more often?

Bottle, 500ml. Pours dark brown, mostly clear, tall foamy light head. Aroma is fruity, wineous, wheat, corn, banana, light vanilla and malt. Mouth feel is light and watery to oily. Carbonation is very soft, almost flat. Taste is quite sweet and somewhat sour, not bitter at all. Flavor is wineous, fruity, wheat, malt, noticeable hop flavors. OK, but simple, slightly boring and very very light.

UPDATED: DEC 19, 2014 0,5 l bottle. Really hazy, brown with a thick, foamy, tan head. Weak aroma of banana, cloves, nuts, dates and caramel. Sweetish taste of banana, cloves, nuts and caramel. Slightly bitter finish. Creamy mouthfeel, medium to full body, average carbonation. Decent Dunkelweizen that is highly quaffable but also lacking excitement.

Really good--zesty wheatiness and other hefe notes as expected. The malt addition is more notable in this one’s appearance than its taste, but subtlety isn’t a bad thing (could’ve easily ruined the whole thing) even if means that the beer doesn’t stand out as much as it could have.

Dark pour, white head. Fruit, wheat, toast and clove aroma. Flavor follows aroma. Medium body with a nice creamy feel.

Nevelig bruin bier met bescheiden, crèmewitte kraag. Aroma van mouten, banaan, koffie. Licht zuur, medium bitter. Wel wat waterig, verder prima bier.

Copper color. Very cloudy. Weak head. Banana and other fruits in aroma. Light wet cardboard. Light yeasts hints. Somewhere in the middle there are roasted notes. Rather sweet with slight bitterness. Quite pleasant. Average carbonation, thin texture and light body. Refreshing as befits wheat beer, but aromas are weak. It’s quite ok I guess.
