COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This ale is the first brewed in Kansas since pioneering days. The name "Ad Astra comes from the Kansas State Motto - Ad Astra per Aspera, Latin words meaning "To the Stars through Difficulties". We've blended Pale, Caramel, and Munich malts for a rich amber beer. The hops balance this malty sweetness, and we've chosen Northern brewer and Fuggles hops for their flavor.

so sleepy.. Pours out a dark gold, good foam, decent lacing .. . light malts, cereal, and bread .. . medium mouthfeel .. . pretty simple but doesn’t offend .. . Fame was like a drug. But what was even more like a drug were the drugs.

Tap. Poured a light brown color with a smaller head that went rather quick. Aroma was molasses, brown sugar and grains. Flavor was toast, burnt notes, and candies. Medium body. Above average beer.

Brick red color, clear look, cream colored head. The smell is toasty, bready, whole grains, definite malt forward, and good. The taste is just like the smell. Not bad.

12oz bottle.. pours an ugly muddy amber, a light tope head, good lace... malt bomb, not in a good way, wet grains, rye, toffee, a bit of vomit, alcohol, not good... the taste is really bad, skunked vomit with chemicals, pass on this

Sample at Flying Saucer in KC. The beer is a clear dark amber color with a medium thin light beige head that dissipates steadily. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of caramel malt and grassy hops. Medium body with flavors of hops, caramel malt and a bit of dark fruit. The finish is sweet and malty at first with a lightly grassy hops aftertaste that does not linger long. Decent overall.

Tasted 4/11/11. 12oz bottle. Pours filtered with a maple amber hue. Trace ring of off-white head. Aromas of caramel malts and soapy hops. Medium bodied with a good medium malt roast. Flavors of caramel with a toasty and nutty nuance. Slightly bitter, but the hops remain in the shadow of the malts. A decent palate, but mild.

Pours a medium reddish brown...nothing special. Has a decently foamy head that diminishes fairly quickly. Aroma from 12 oz bottle, 2 weeks from best by date has a nice balance of caramel malt with grassy hop overtones... surprisingly fresh hoppiness despite biscuit-y caramel dominance. Also slightly bitter finish closer to a light IPA. Pleasant but could use some more...amber ale is not my favorite but giving Free State a chance. Not a bad ale.

Reviewed from notes. On tap in August 2009. Pours a moderate brown color with a slight rusty tint. Short white head. The nose brigs some fruits and lift caramel plus a small amount of hops. Bad news underneath though. Just like other beers here, we were unfortunate to get somethig bad going on, as the taste here was quite buttery as well. Luckily this hadn’t pervaded other aspects of the beer all that much. It’s too bad as I really enjoyed their barleywine and that had no off flavors at all. Maybe we just happened to catch a bad time either with brewing or bad lines. It was at the brewpub though, so either way I have to say that it’s on them.
