This ale is the first brewed in Kansas since pioneering days. The name Ad Astra comes from the Kansas State Motto - Ad Astra per Aspera, Latin words meaning "To the Stars through Difficulties". We’ve blended Pale, Caramel, and Munich malts for a rich amber beer. Nugget and Fuggles hops balance out this malt forward brew.

On tap at Free State. Pours an amber color with white head. Malty sweet, bready/biscuit, caramel flavors. My favorite of Free State’s regular line-up. Very tasty altbier.

Attractive amber color witha thin biege head. Grainy nose with some caramel sweetness. This is a sweet beer with some toffee, sweetened tea and a wet grain astringency. There are some slate and metalic notes in here. Not my favorite...

A bit astringent smell. Body is a little thin. Decent bitterness to balance, but still a bit more. Some darker caremelized flavors. A bit raisiny character on the end of taste. Dries out in the finish. Malty but not sweet.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. The nose is toasted, caramel malts, with some fruit. There is an odd yeast character to this beer that I am not fond of. The flavor is toasty, caramel/toffee floral/fruity. Not a bad beer.

Pours a deep amber color with a finger of foam.... nice bready, malty, slightly buttery caramel notes. On the palate its focused and clean. Nothing to crazy but a solid malt driven beer with just a hint of bitterness on the finish. Decent mouthfeel, pretty solid.

Bottle at home from my Minneapolis Town Hall glass. Pours deep tawny brown, very thick pale tan head, amazing lacing, Nose is big fruit, with loads of toasty notes, fucktons of biscuit and crisp crusty bread, very toasty, light smoke and some lovely yeast esters as well. Flavours of very big fruit and toast, lots of marmalade and molasses, smoke, toast, red licorice, short finish. A fine brew, but a bit confusing.. Thanks Unclemike!

Poured from a bottle received from unclemike. Pours a darker amber color with a beige head of foam. The aroma is roasty with a heavy malt influence. Taste has some caramel aspects on top of a peaty, Scottish ale type of persona. Interesting and hearty beer.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2012 12oz bottle for this rating poured into a Chimay goblet glass. However, I have had his many times in my Kansas life. Bored at a party right now and decided to rate it. For what it is it’s good beer. A slightly sweeter and hoppy and roasty. Despite the roast I always considered this an English style beer and not an Altbier. Its drinkable, flavor, and not particular to any style if you ask me.
