Indra (2594) - Overland Park, Kansas, USA - JAN 16, 2014
Draft from growler. Roasty, lightly spicy aroma, with notes of chocolate, faint coffee, dark bread and rye, some earthy hop in the background as well. Nearly solid black in color, only showing some dark brown around the edges when held directly to the light, and features a lasting, creamy, ivory head and very fine lacing. Flavor profile is mildly roasty, very gently sweet and spicy with suggestions of cocoa, rye and a mild, hoppy bitterness appearing late. Smooth, drying and full with low to moderate effervesce on the palate and a medium body. Pretty nice, really, very well-balanced.

Damico (2508) - Royersford, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 22, 2013
Pours thick dark black coffee in color with a beige head. Aroma brings a ton of smoke over roasted malts. Flavor brings roasted malts and smoke with some unexpected creamy lactose going on.

Growler @ Exira Beer Summit IV, Day 2. Thanks to jcnielsen! Pours a deep brown appearance with a creamy brown head. Very roasty coffee, dark chocolate, spicy herbal, a bit floral aroma. Flavor is herbal and earthy with a touch of smoke, rye, chocolate, and caramel. Fair amount of earth. Not bad.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a near clear very dark brown with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has strong roasted malts with a hint of bitter hops. Flavor begins with dark grains and is joined by roasted malts and rye that finish rye.

I was a fan of this beer. Dark, roasty, with a spicy character that is forefronted. Sweet through the middle.

Pours a deep almost black with a large foamy tan head. Aroma of molasses, chocolate, toffee, caramel and nuts. Flavor of chocolate, coffee, molasses, caramel, spicy rye notes, tobacco and roasted nuts. Really well done.

Gregis (1281) - Shawnee, Kansas, USA - APR 26, 2009
Growler. Pours black with burgundy highlights and a finger of creamy beige head that diminishes with time. The nose is of chocolaty malt and spicy rye...simple but pleasurable. Light to medium-bodied and slightly grainy it finishes with a spicy and lightly astringent finish. The flavor features a forward spicy rye note up front with an ashy, baker’s chocolate malt note in support. This is a solid session beer that highlights the use of rye better than most of the ryes that I have sampled. Having said that, that could be to its detriment, overall. If you aren’t particularly fond of rye, this one might be a bit too much for you.
