On tap @ Free State Brewery. A dark black with a bubbly ran head with tons of lacing. The aroma is toasted malts with bits of chocolate and coffee. The flavor is like a toned-down imperial stout, with malt and coffee up front, and a smooth chocolate and bourbon aftertaste.

Shaker pint at the brewpub consumed today. This is a damn good porter. Its strong but no trace of alcohol. Hops are low and not interfering with the porter. There is a slight prune character but no heavy handed ash or bitterness. Its hard to say what is present but easy to pick out what over the top characteristics are absent, which is what makes this a damn good porter.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 wavers1 (859) - Notown, California, USA - MAR 19, 2010
64oz growler courtesy of mreusch, thanks a ton for this want list rarity! pours thick dense, opaque brown with a medium brown head that has some late rising bubbles. a lot od roast in this one, the nose is predominantly roast, bitter cocoa, and sweet licorice. there are hints of hops, oak, and slightly earthy yeast as well. the taste starts much the same, a ton of roast, but in the finish and aftertaste the oak comes through a lot more, and the hops a bit more as well. it leaves a spicy, earthy aftertaste with hidden notes of caramel and vanilla under the roast. the mouthfeel is creamy and medium, would do a world of good if it was a bit thicker. a nice offering, glad i got a hold of this!

GTMW ’08. Poured an opaque black color with a tan soapy head. Lager-ish, bottom fermented aroma with chocolate and subdued anise elements. Slightly sweet and medium bodied with some mild bitterness at the end. Tasted of brown sugar, roasty malt, and some baker’s chocolate. Decent, but not a show stopper.

Sampled at the Savor DC event. While I was waiting in line to try this someone in front of me asked what style of beer this was. The head brewer himself replied, "it’s a Baltic stout." So I asked him whether is was a Baltic Porter or a Stout, he again repeated, "Baltic stout." What the hell does that mean? Anyways, pours a deep, oily black with a thick, creamy white head. Slight roasted, chocolate aroma. Flavor has licorice, chocolate, nuts, toasted grains and some dried fruits. I don’t want to pigeon hole a beer, but maybe they should decide whether they are brewing a Baltic Porter or an Imperial Stout.
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 argo0 (9226) - Washington DC, USA - MAY 17, 2008
(Savor, draft) Persistent tan head atop brown-black body. Aroma is medium sweet, chocolate, raisin, roast, light coffee. Taste is medium sweet, chocolate/coffee, roast, some raisin, cherry. Smooth medium body. For me, the highlight of the event. I actually got someone to curse me out for suggesting he go try it -- he enjoyed it so much that he was pissed he wouldn’t be able to get it again.
