While walking through a field and enjoying a lazy summer evening, our head brewer Steve stepped on a stick that popped up and nicked his leg. Or so he thought, until he found two puncture marks on his ankle. The copperhead bite may have caused a trip to the hospital for Steve, but it also provided just the inspiration he and Chuck needed to name their new beer – yep, one lowly snake in the grass is the namesake of one of our most popular beers.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear, copper body with a dense and frothy, off-white, finger-width head that dissipates quickly while leaving a good amount of pretty, sticky lacing. Aroma is malty with a medium caramel sweetness and a fainter grapefruit, citrus hop. Flavor is a nice balance with an above average bitterness. Deeper pines and grapefruit with a rounded caramel that adds just a light sweetness. Finishes with a flavorful, dry, medium bitterness and hint of sweetness from the caramel. Plenty of lingering, deep pine and grapefruit aftertaste with just a touch of resin. Medium bodied and smooth with a nice, light crisp finish. Overall, a well balanced, flavorful pale ale. Nice deep pines that last well past the finish. I’m becoming a big fan of the body on all these Free State beers. Solid.

Had on tap at the brewpub while visiting the university. Big cat-litter hop aroma that goes too far into the flavor.

Thanks to MReusch for the growler. Pours a nice dark copper with a thin white head. Light citrus, bready, bitter earthy aroma. Taste is grapefruit bitterness and bready malt that balance each other very well. Very good ipa or pale ale (whatever it is), very drinkable and nice tasty hops.

Draft at the brewery. O.G. 1.057, IBU 52.5 Apparently the recipe has changed a little. Pours a thin head, with nice lacing over a golden brown (SRM 15) body...nose of light pine and citrus....tastes early of light malt then late grapefruit bitterness....mouth feel is medium. This is a bit light for an IPA.

Tap @ brewpub, pours with a beautiful completely clear amber color. Aroma is all hops, lightly resin-y and very sweet hops. Taste is all sweet hops but clean and well attenuated behind that. Just a bit of hop bitterness at the end. A very nice, standard brewpub hoppy brew.

On tap at Free State. After a long bike ride on a slow bike, this is exactly what I needed to drink on their patio. Poured a clear golden orange with a soapy off white head that laces down. The nose is light but good. Herbal, orange citrus with a caramel base. Body is light but creamy. Lightly sweet caramel, lemon, and pale malt flavors on the first sip. This quickly leads to herbal and piney hops that finish with a strong bitterness. Really refreshing on a hot Kansas day!

On tap. Pours a clear amber-copper with thin head that doesn’t even cover the entire surface. Piney, citrus nose with some malt sweetness showing. Flavor is, naturally, a wall of hop bitterness that gives way to pine, grapefruit citrus, bitter orange, and a nice dose of malt sweetness to provide a pleasant balance. For a beer that appeared to have weak carbonation, the palate is rather pin-prickly and lively. A pretty solid and well-balanced American-style IPA
