Pours a deep almost black with a foamy deep tan head that left sticky lacing. Head looks like a milkshake! Aroma of roast, citrus, pine and coffee. Flavor of coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt. Dry and roasty with a heavy hop bitterness bite. Hop flavor is piney and grapefruit.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Flight pour on tap at the brewery (Lawrence, KS). Pours a deep blackish brown hue overall, not opaque with some healthy glow washing out into the edges and bottom with firmer cakey brownish head atop. Good thick ringer and mellow film sit atop, laces nicely. Aromas show a bit of lactose, oatmeal, gentle caramel and toasty elements. Subtle roast, coffee and cream meet a faint vanilla and cocoa jab. A gentle earthy hop profile grows as it settles a bit more. Initial is medium bodied, perhaps a bit more full, a bit of creaminess quickly dies into again a more hop driven stout. Mellow roast, earth and some decent citrusy and piney hop character. Touches of caramel, char and firmer roast hit the middle with that gentle lactose creaminess, milk sugar triying to lighten this thing up but a potent and dominant hop character setting the pace into the backend and finish. Touches of pine, black olive, earth and gentle citrus mingle with caramel, creamy, coffee and ashy roast. The sweetness from the milk sugar or usual character of the style seems clearly overwhelmed by a firm and potent hop character. Finish is a decent bitterness, pine, soap, subtle roast and lactose finally hit and trail out in the absolute finish and aftertaste. Overall, I was quite surprised at the hop character here. Even more surprised than the Oatmeal Stout as the very nature of a Milk Stout should be emphasizing that character. Still, hop character rues the day here. Mixed feelings on this one. It drinks well but again, I was just very surprised. Touch of black olive at times.

Nitro at the brewpub. Pours a clear dark brown with a brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of sweet dark grains and roasted malts. Flavor has much more roasted malts, with a hint of smoke, that mellow to allow a touch of sweetness.

Im a fan of the style but this was a bit too toasty for me. Los of roasted barley. Had in Lawrence.

10oz draft at the brewpub. I had this the year before and the most recent batch. Generally, this is a strong stout with lots of hops and roasted malts. It could be a bad mix but this beer makes it work. Its a good mix of aroma hops and allowing for the malt bitterness as opposed to hop bitterness. Sweet milky chocolate flavors work nicely in this beer. Well attenuated, allowing for the malts to provide the sweetness, which is accented by the plentiful hops. Its a nice treat.

Draft. Enjoyable aroma of roasty, dark malts, dark chocolate, leafy, fresh, piney hops, and some mild coffee toffee. Dark brown-black color, head is tan and foamy with plenty of lace. Flavor profile is likewise malty, roasty and hoppy as advertised, with plenty of dark chocolate sweetness, moderate bitterness and plenty of vibrant, leafy, fresh hop flavors coming through on the finish. Creamy and smooth on the palate with medium effervescence, dryish on the palate, body is not so full. Rather nice, I like a good hoppy Stout and this fits the bill.
