COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First the name - Hop Jacks (or Hop Backs as they are also called) are pieces of traditional brewing equipment that are used to add fresh hop flavors and aromas to the hot wort as it is transferred from the brew kettle to the heat exchanger. Fresh hop flowers would be placed in the Hop Jack for the very freshest hop character. Though hop jacks are still in use, they are not in use here. However, the results achieved with this beer are similar and represent the kind of hop character that is achieved using a Hop Jack.

This beer is one of a series that will showcase the diversity of hop varieties available to us. Each batch of Hop Jack Ale will have the same malt recipe but will differ in the hops used. The ibu's will remain the same also, allowing the drinker to appreciate the differences between hop varieties. The malt profile for this beer is very simple, using only pale ale malt and a very light caramel malt. We will make this beer in 1/2 size batches so expect it to move quickly. Served unfiltered. Stop in and see what hop we used this time!

On tap at the brewpub. This batch was made with Ahtanums, a first for me. The RB hop guide describes Ahtunums as similar to Cascades. I, however, got none of the big pine or citrus notes typical to a Sierra Nevada PA or an Anchor Liberty. I did, however find this to be a very solid session beer. It pours a hazy, dark straw with a fluffy, white head and wispy lace. Sweet pale malt and faint, earthy (almost "meaty") hops act as a counterbalance. Light to medium-bodied and soft with a tight, mildly bitter finish. The flavor is a big pale malt front with an immediate kick from the hops (again earthy/"meaty"). Very well balanced and supremely drinkable. This is certainly one of the better APAs that I have from a brewpub, and if they bottled it, I’d buy it.

Very good pale ale. I wish this was available more often. Pungent hop aroma. Pours golden yellow. Tangy and delightful.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a cloudy orange with a white head. Aroma of floral hops and bready malt. Flavor is very very bready with a bitter hops finish. Pleasantly drinkable and an interesting pale ale. 7/4/7/4/14 [3.6/5]

UPDATED: JUN 28, 2011 Citra version
10oz long thin tulip glass. Beer pours beautifully with a frothy head and a definitely unfiltered, dark orange color that allows little clarity. Aroma is fresh and crisp with tangy, light, citrus hops. The hops are accompanied well in the flavor with a malt backbone that is present but does not get in the way of the hops. Goes down easy.

German Norther Brewer, similar score, the floral/herbal hops work well with this malt bill as well.

Draught at brewpub. Orange hue. Nice floral aroma. Solid hoppy presence. "This is good," I said. Very enjoyable.

Growler purchased on Dec. 6, 2008 and drank two days later. The body is cloudy medium gold with a long lasting bright white head. The aroma is nice grapefruit and fresh baked bread. There is also some good fresh cut green wood. The taste is medium orange peels and grass. There is also some Russet potato skin. Overall, this is a very solid, highly hopped APA. Nicely done.

Growler, filled about 3 weeks ago - from csbosox. Pour is golden tan with a very hazy, cloudy unfiltered look with a tan one inch off white head. Active carbonation. Decent lacing as head falls quickly. Aroma of fresh clean resin pine hops. Some slightly toasted maltiness present as well. Nice fresh hop nose. Taste is is the resin, malt and pine in that order. The finish features a bit of cardboard and bitter orange peel. Palate is medium, again very much an unfiltered experience. Overall a tasty brew. Thanks for picking this one up for me Chris.

Ahtanum version. Appearance: Pours a hazy, dark gold body with a small, creamy white head. Smell: Heady aroma of grass and lemon zest citrus notes as well as some sugar-encrusted pale malts. Taste: Pale malts start with a taste of sweetened lemon juice. Grass follows quickly with a medium bitterness. The bitterness ends abruptly allowing some subtle hints of sweetened citrus to return for the finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Very slight stickiness to the mouthfeel. Drinkability: It’s hard to be smarmy with a beer like this in your hand.

Growler thanks to csbosox: Pours a hazy copper orange with a thin, spotty-lacing white head. Aroma of fresh citrusy grapefruity hops and some semi-sweet pale malt. Body starts with a nice mild sweetness and good fresh citrusy hoppy balance before a crisp, bittersweet finish. A very drinkable and well-flavored APA. Thanks Chris!
