COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Imperial Stout is brewed to an Original gravity of 20 P using 10 different types of malt which combined weigh 1,400+ lbs. That works out to 3.4 lbs per gallon of finished beer or almost 4/10ths of a pound in every glass. The dark malts give a roasty flavor and dark color, caramel malts add sweetness and a full body. Three different hop varieties also add their own complexity (and about 78 IBUs). The bittering hops are Northern Brewers which also add a bit of a current-like flavor when used this heavily. The early aromatic hops are Fuggles, the same that we use in the Ad Astra and the Oatmeal Stout. The later aromatic hops are Cascades, the same that we use to finish Copperhead. The Cascades add a bit of an American Flavor to this classic British style.
The Ironman is named for one of our favorite regular customers, Walt Hull, who is a local blacksmith.

From a 12 oz bottle at home. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma of prunes and toasted nuts. Flavors of plum, licorice and chocolate. Creamy and viscous mouthfeel. Smooth finish. Tasty.

This is a good and well balanced Imperial Stout but was a bit too heavy on the roasted malts for my liking. Had in Lawrence.

Bottle: Poured a dark black color stout with a rather large brown foamy head with good retention and some minimal lacing. Aroma of dry coffee notes with roasted malt is dominant. Taste is also quite dry with some coffee notes with roasted malt with light bitter black chocolate notes. Body is a bit thin for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. This is a middle of the road offering with quite dry aftertaste that is veering into astringency.

12oz bottle generously gifted from the Free State crew post GTMW 2013. I’m really digging this beer, very sublime and easy going for the style these days, no overwhelming bourbon or oak or champagne yeasts or whatever. Clean chocolate body, some mild minty hops..sort of walks a similar path as a big Black IPA, but less hoppy and leans into the creamy, oily rich malt tones. Caramel, cocoa, black coffee. Easy going and quite enjoyable.

An easy going Imperial Stout with all the classic flavors clearly pronounced over a highly quaffable body which came together to remind me of Bear Republic’s Big Bear Black

A black body, which verges on über dark brown, supports a desaturated light khaki, tight to lightly frothy head quickly settling to a solid ring and a few thin peninsulas of lace
-
Black licorice, dates, chocolate, roasty coffee, and citrus notes are expressed as a nicely balanced bitter-sweet experience on a surprisingly light body with solid carbonation for the style which resonates and builds creamy layers of roast and restrained citrusy hops

Brown pour with creamy tan head and lace. Aroma of light milk chocolate and light coffee. Flavor matches aroma. Medium bodied but a tad thin.

Bottle from Bob - thanks! Pours black with a ring of tan foam and steady carbonation. Nice aroma with dense, fudge chocolate, roast, light coffee, and some heavier dark fruit aspects with a trailing edge of hop bitterness. Taste is heavy on the roast with chocolate and raisin notes. Also seems like molasses with hop bitterness. Smooth, coating mouthfeel. Straight ahead imperial stout - very nice.

Bottle. Pours black with a thin dark brown head that dissipates quickly to the edges quickly. Aroma has notes of dark fruits and roasted malts with a bit of pine hops and some underlying chocolate (plus a hint of booze. Flavor has roasted malts and bitter chocolate up front with a bit of underlying pine hops and booze.
