COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Imperial Stout is brewed to an Original gravity of 20 P using 10 different types of malt which combined weigh 1,400+ lbs. That works out to 3.4 lbs per gallon of finished beer or almost 4/10ths of a pound in every glass. The dark malts give a roasty flavor and dark color, caramel malts add sweetness and a full body. Three different hop varieties also add their own complexity (and about 78 IBUs). The bittering hops are Northern Brewers which also add a bit of a current-like flavor when used this heavily. The early aromatic hops are Fuggles, the same that we use in the Ad Astra and the Oatmeal Stout. The later aromatic hops are Cascades, the same that we use to finish Copperhead. The Cascades add a bit of an American Flavor to this classic British style.
The Ironman is named for one of our favorite regular customers, Walt Hull, who is a local blacksmith.

Pours an opaque black with a thick tan head. Not much in the aroma. Taste is roasty but overpowered by the bitterness of the hops. Tasty & bitter. An interesting stout!

A great imperial stout. Tastes close to Rasputin, but quite a bit mellower (less bite). The malt is nice without being overwhelmingly thick/sweet.

Draught in Lawrence. Nice dark brown pour with a nice khaki head and lacing. Pretty hoppy aroma balanced with roasted malt. Green hops in the flavor at first then finishes with coffee. Nice and not overpowering.

Growler courtesy of mreusch, thanks Matt! Pours dark mahogany with ruby edges and thin tan head. The aroma is a bit mild with some roast, some chocolate notes and a touch of caramel and toffee. As it warms a pleasing thin layer of earthiness is noticed. The taste is pretty darn smooth and near creamy at times bringing in notes of dark roasted malts and then moving into a nice mix of black licorice, chocolate and earthiness. The more I drink this the more I like it.

Thanks to the TampaCrew for sharing this one. Pours brown with an off-white head. Nose is roast, hops, pine, bitter, spice, and slight chocolate. Flavor is similar with a bit of lingering pine. Medium body and pretty good.

On tap at Free State for the 20th anniversary. Pours a very dark brown, almost black body with a nice, thick and creamy, milk chocolate head that dissipates slowly and remains nicely laced. Solid aroma of creamy roasts and coffee, light milky chocolate, and some citrus hop backing. Flavor is similar, but has a slightly sour dark-fruitiness to it. Prunes and figs. Very earthy with lots of roasted malts and milk chocolate with a nice balance of citrus hops. Aftertaste is milky with a subtle roasty bitterness that lingers for a decent amount of time. Palate is pretty thin, but very creamy and milky. Overall, another impressive beer from Free State. Pretty straightforward Imp Stout, but I really do like the "milkiness" that this beer provides. Its very light, but has enough flavor to go around. Solid brew.
