This beer employs a blend of 5 malts and some unmalted oats that add some silky qualities to the mouthfeel. Columbus and Crystal hops provide bitterness and some flavor. A relatively new hop variety called Citra, with tropical fruit and citrus aromas and flavors, provides the amazing finish of this IPA. Josiah Miller was an anti-slavery man born and raised in the South Carolina. In the 1850s Miller migrated to Lawrence after receiving a law degree at the University of Indiana and started the publication of Kansas Free State, an anti-slavery newspaper. In 1857 he was elected probate judge of Douglas County and was a member of the first state senate in 1861. As chairman of the judiciary committee, Miller suggested the motto on the state seal, Ad Astra per Aspera. Miller was interned at Lawrence’s Oak Hill cemetery upon his death in 1870 due to complications from an amputated leg.

This is a very nice IPA. Golden amber in the glass. Lots of hop aroma and good bitterness. Had in Lawrence.

Pint at the brewpub. Pours crystalline copper. Aroma is nice and grapefruity with a strong hop presence. Good use of hops in the flavor as well and it’s a citrusy, grapefruity brew. There is a stray metallic and vegetal quality mixed in with the more desireable flavors. Decent.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear copper color with white head. Citrus, hoppy, orange flavors. Has a smooth, creamy mouthfeel, due to the oats. Interesting beer.

Pours a translucent amber with a medium bubbly/creamy off white head that left sticky lacing. Aroma of tropical fruits and mixed citrusy hop notes with a touch of caramel malt. Flavor of grapefruit, pine and Cheerios. Great IPA but I’m already missing the super dry not much specialty malt IPAs I was getting spoiled with a bit back on the east coast.

Growler shared by drabmuh. Thanks Matt! The beer appears clear and copper oranges hued, with a half inch of white head that leaves a fair amount of lacing on the glass. The aroma is sweet, earthy, and brings scents of dank hops. The flavor is balanced, with some sweetness from the malts blending with tropical citrus fruits. The beer is slightly sticky, stubbornly clinging to the palate between sips. This goes down very easily. I could put away my fair share of this. A good IPA, I would have this again. It poured a clear orange color with a white head. The aroma was very hop centric but not overwhelming. The taste was a combination of medium bitterness, but again not too overwhelming, but a great combination. This was my favorite of all the beers on tap.

Very alluringly aromatic blend with an earthy feel and a crisp citrus finish. If the aroma alone doesn’t entice salivation, the beautifully crafted and exquisitely proportioned balance of the artisanal and the cerebral will not leave you alone. I found myself wanting to bath in this masterpiece.

A: The beer pours amber in color with an off-white head. S: Not the greatest nose on this one. A fair amount of toasted malt(?!) and just a very malty nose overall. There are some floral and grass hop notes with a rather mild fruit and citrus aroma. T: The flavor opens up with a fair amount of grass and straw followed by some tea notes. Sweet malt in the form of toffee with a strange popcorn note. On the finish, mild pine flavor and bitterness. M: Medium in body with medium carbonation. O: I wanted to like this if for no other reason than the generous gesture made by JeepCop, but it just didn’t happen.
